Before asking non members of this forum for help, please give me a good answer to this question.
With so many animals here in (fill in the city or state) why should I help dogs in Mexico? I do want to help, but I haven't thought of a good answer to this valid question. ![]() |

Of course it's a valid question, but the way I feel is....
There are a ton of charities out there that need money. Giving to any one of them won't save the world, but your contribution helps. Who to give to though, when so many need your assistance? The way I feel is I give to what's near and dear to my heart, or what personally touches me. I give to a charity that helps kids who have birth defects, because I have a child who was born with one. I give to breast cancer research, because my mom died of breast cancer. I give to a few other charities that have personal meaning to me as well. When it comes to animals specifically - my shelter here needs money too, and yes I have donated. But they are better off here than they are in Mexico, there are more people willing to help their local shelter than a relatively unknown shelter in Playa del Carmen. Since I know (and love) Andy and Jen and I consider them near and dear to my heart, that's enough reason for me to donate my time and/or money to them from time to time. I love Playa too, it means something to me personally, so when someone needs help, I try to do what I can (bomberos, hurricane relief, etc.). Doesn't mean I won't help another charity, animal related or not, just means I am ALSO helping some friends in Mexico who need it. Put it this way - one person can't save the world with their donation. At some point and time, if you have money to donate, you have to decide where that money is to go. You can pick the Peanut Pet Shelter and know it's a worthy cause (I've been there, I know!) and right now they REALLY need our help. Next time you have money to spare, you can donate to your local shelter. And so on and so forth. Just my dos pesos. ![]() |

That is a good question to have an answer for, Mexivoof. I hear people posing the same question when aid for starving people in Africa (for example) is discussed ("we have people starving right here in the US!"). What Shammy said was right on. Another thing I consider is the support network. Here in Mexico, there is no money to help stray animals, outside of private donation, and there are VERY few shelters. Without Andy and Jen, as well as a handful of other locals I know with a passion for animals (Sherry Stevens and Laura are just two), these animals would have no one, and nothing. As sad as the stray pet problem can be in the US, I don't think there is any way that it can be as bad as it is here. At least in the US there are humane societies and humane ways of terminating the lives of animals who have no one. Here the dogs just lead miserable lives until they finally die on the street by being hit by a car, or of disease. ![]() There is a pack of dogs that hang out by my friend Sara's house. One of these was a fairly young (under a year) female dog who recently had a litter of puppies that wound up on the street, too. She's a sweet, lovely dog and Sara and her husband were hoping to come up with the money to get her spayed (or take her to the free spay neuter clinic next month). Well, yesterday, we saw poor mama dog "hooked up" with a male street dog and realized she must have gone into heat again, so it looks like there will be yet MORE street dogs running around the neighborhood soon. And this might continue to happen to this poor little dog until her body finally wears out.I just feel so sad and discouraged by the street dog/cat thing here. Honestly, it is the worst thing about living here and it's something I will never get over. I'm so grateful for people like Andy and Jen, and for all of you amazing people who help them to do the good work they do. ![]() |

Thanks Shammy,
I am still waiting for Babs or Andy and Jen to send me something printable that I can hand out at the local groomers, or post on my "pet causes" web site. I did send them a pay pal donation a few months ago, now I have more time than money, but I know I can help in other ways, and I know that question will come up. My "pet cause"? Basset Buddies Rescue. Located just outside of Milwukee they are doing the same thing and having the same problems as Andy and Jen. They spay/neuter, give shots, take care of other medical problems (sometimes for life) and try to place Basset Hounds and mixes in "forever homes" in Northern Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and the UP. My avatar is one of them. We've had him 3 1/2 years, and since he is quiet right now we love him to death (not always the case ).Last edited by Mexivoof : 05-08-2008 at 05:40 PM. |

Heather, I agree 100%. I am just trying to figure out a way to get an average Milwukeean to go to the trouble of figuring out Pay Pal and spending a few buck versus writing a check to the Humane Society, or Basset Buddies and dropping it in the mail.

Rick, wonderful plans!!!!
![]() ![]() ![]() I'm not sure I will be able to raise enough money this week to *sponsor* a kennel, sure hope I do though! I get asked the same question ALL the time about why I am so passionate about helping out some animal shelter in some small town in Mexico. It is a cause near and dear to my heart, plain and simple! ![]() |
