Grrrrrr- I can not say how MUCH I'd wish it was 2009 already. Which would mean I'd be working and getting paid.........which would mean I could donate.
Right now my acc is in the minus- but as soon (or better: in the distant future) it shows a plus I'll donate to whatever cause is up right then and there.

The new plans look AWESOME and well- the work of Jen and Andy is priceless (and wonderful Maureen and Rick as well of course, along with Laura and and and and........all those who make it work!!).

Mexivoof- along the lines of what Heather and Shammy posted:
- while there are worthy causes to take care of close by the causes in countries such as Mexico often have a much harder time to survive, get organized etc. and less publicity, so I personally always tend to support them instead of those at home who have the publicity and get more attention from those close by (as we can see the Pet Shelter in its own way is still an "underground" project- also simply because many in the vicinity hardly have enough for themselves, let alone for dogs.....).

- I also like the fact that this is a "personal" project. Those who run it and are responsible are easily identifiable and one can get a personal impression of them. Not so with many other causes where there are more people involved, where one isn't really sure where the money is going etc..
This personal aspect and "easy to follow" aspect is what makes it great as well.

- and of course the aspect of being in love with the area comes into play..........which goes hand in hand with knowing the hardships the area has in stall. I fully understand why someone who has never been there would rather donate for a shelter close by- donations are where the heart is!

Andy and Jen - If you haven't already, count us in for two. We have been very fortunate this quarter and feel the need to spread it around.

I can also officially let everyone know that if you are thinking of purchasing a property in and around Playa del Carmen and select us, Bric International, as your Buyer Broker, we will donate $1000 of our commission to The Peanut Animal Shelter in your name. There will be a special link soon (I hope) on Andy and Jen's website to make your inquiry through. In the meantime, we work on the honor system. You can contact us through the links in my signature.

Hi Mexivoof,

I would be more than happy to help compose a printed piece that you can use to help fund raise in your area. Thank you so much for your willingness to solicit funds for the Shelter! I totally understand the challenge of asking for money to support a cause across the border and your need for something to present.Your question is excellent & it is a commonly posed one. AnnaLynn (Shammy), Heather & Joana were spot on in their responses! You girls are so eloquent!

Can you bear with me until next week...when I return to Playa. I am presently in Chicago. I do not have photos, logos or graphics on my computer here. I also would like to confer with Andy and Jen to write an effective, persuasive piece. We would love to help you help us.

Essentially, the straight-up answer to the question is ...the problem of homeless, suffering dogs & cats is in fact greater here and yet the resources to address the problem are extremely limited. We are also finding most Foundations that award grants for animal welfare are prohibited to fund organizations outside of the US due to the way their charters/mission statements are written. Thus, it is extremely difficult to get funding as other rescues do in the states.

Thanks Mexivoof for the difference you make in the lives of animals! I'll be in touch next week.

Maureen

I get asked the same question ALL the time about why I am so passionate about helping out some animal shelter in some small town in Mexico. It is a cause near and dear to my heart, plain and simple!

we have around 80 peeps signed up to attend the Peep Meet at Bad Boys this Saturday. just bring plenty of jewelry and we WILL raise enough money to sponsor a kennel.

Hi Mexivoof (and other wonderful people on this thread of course!)
I think that there are a lot of people that are weary about donating to an organization that is not in the states... but there are even more people that are willing to help out animals (You'll be surprised).
A few weeks ago I wrote on the regular Peanut thread about doing a raffle for a necklace and earring set from Lia Sophia. Well I'm happy to report that as of today I have sold 38 tickets!!! I didn't think I would sell that many... I printed 50 raffle tickets (which was my goal) so that I could donate enough for 1 kennel but a few days ago I decided to be adventurous and print out another 50... so that is my new goal to try to sell all 100 tickets. If it doesn't happen, then at least I have enough for 1 kennel, so that is awesome!.
I put a bulletin up at work and people that I don't know that well have bought tickets because they are animal lovers and they want to help out! I've been truly amazed at the great response here at work.
A bunch of people asked me how I became involved and I told them that I was planning a trip to Cancun, and found this forum... I started on the forum looking for places to eat, trips to take, etc. Then I found the peanut pet shelter and that was all I needed. I told them I met Andy at a gathering (peep meet) and saw this beautiful black dog there and that is all it took! (I didn't tell them that I didn't get a chance to actually talk to Andy... thats just between us!!) I told them that I've kept up on the forum and when I found out about this project I just knew I had to help.
Once you tell someone the story of the dogs that Andy and Jen take in, and that some dogs have been beaten, tortured or hit by cars, that these wonderful people take them in, heal them and spay and neuter them and that once they are well they put them up for adoption, then people are willing to help out.
So my 2 cents would be. Never under estimate the heart of an animal lover!!

Thanks for the encouragement. As soon as Maureen e-mails me her stuff I'll give it my best shot. Milwaukeeans are known for their stingyness
