What's going on around here?

What's with all of the thread locking and post deleting these days? Twice today I have had a post deleted. I suppose it was in an effort to return a thread back to the dark depths from which I resurected it because someone took the subject matter (of the thread) personally. Will this disappear too??

Time for a list of topics that can be discussed ... how, when; by whom; and the maximum allowable number of verbs per paragraph?

It's one thing to have a thread locked or post deleted because people are becoming rude, abusive, obnoxious, or more offensive than usual. But to just have it zapped?? And we have all been behaving like such good boys and girls.

Just saw Heather's post in another thread asking not to start threads like this if unsatisfied with certain aspects of thread moderation. Apologies to all that I did not see that post earlier. Sorry I can't delete the thread myself.

I saw the suggestion to send a PM regarding such matters. Difficult to do if you don't know who deleted a post or why. Might be a nice courtesy to be contacted if a post is deleted with an explanation. Would certainly help prevent such future transgressions.

Won't bother with a PM ... don't want to clutter up anyones trash bin.

I don't mean to be a mal content, but I just feel a bit "over moderated" lately. And having posts entirely deleted with no explanation feels so ... Stalinistic. <------ is that a word?

i can understand it when a thread becomes rude or belligerent, but a good ole opinionated-from the heart-making my head want to explode thread should be okay..IMO

I am as big a fan of free speech as the next guy, but remember...

When you are posting on an internet forum, it is no different (in my opinion) then being a guest in someone's house. You want to drink their beer and eat their appetizers, you need to respect the rules of their house.

The owners of this board and the moderators have every right to delete or lock a thread on this board at any time for any reason or, quite honestly, for no reason at all.

Again, in my opinion, think of yourself as a guest in their living room. If the host says "please don't talk about X" you wouldn't jump up in the middle of the living room and complain about being "censored" would you?

Keep in mind - I like you Frank, I enjoy chatting with you, I am a big fan of your posts and your posting style... I just think it is good that we remember that we are all guests here. I just think, as guests, its bad form to second guess the decisions of the owners or the mods in terms of things being edited, deleted, locked and users (guests) being asked to leave.

Just my dos pesos...

Stewart ... I can't argue any of the points you made. All quite valid.

But even as a guest in someones home, it is reasonable to expect some level of communication and consistancy in the application of the household rules. That is not to say that it is REQUIRED of the homes owners ... but it does make visitors feel more welcome.

I would have closed it as soon as that became apparent for lack of the necessary ingenuity from the main proselytisers.

I have had threads closed before: some remained closed but others were reopened when I politely explained - via PM - why I thought some good/interest would come of it.

Kind of, "Objection!", "I'll allow it.".

Even if they had remained closed, so be it - I won't be the one who throws the first stone, unlike some self-righteous people out there.

If someone at my house said something that I objected to, I would tell them it was inappropriate and should not be said again. If I were to tell them to leave I would let them know why.
