It was such a sad, depressing day

We went to visit Mom who is in a sub-acute rehab facility since the stroke in March, brought her an adorable, bright colored capri set which the aides promptly dressed her in. My brother picked up Chinese takeout, I picked up Italian pastries; she ate not a bite.

It is very difficult to engage her in conversation, she confuses very easily. I can see deep in her eyes that she is trying very hard to comprehend and retain the conversation, but then she glazes over and I can see the sadness there.

We all want to have hope that she will improve but with each visit I have no choice but to accept that she's not the vibrant, active Mom she was.

I want my old Mom back.

Oh, sweetie! I can relate a lot to what you're saying as Mom's dementia continues to progress. Just treasure all your moments with her now, what there is of her, no matter how painful, for as long as you have her. I will keep hoping for the best for her... and for you. Hugs to you all!

I am so sorry for you. (yea, it is turning into a teary day). I read a book called The Final Gifts. It was a life saver when we were dealing with my mom's last days and weeks. It helped me accept and understand what she was experiencing. I highly recommend it.

I called my Mom today
She's progressively getting worse with dementia/alzheimers but she was very lucid today.
...I constantly worry about her (and my dad) and I know she will never get better, but it was nice to have a great conversation with her.

I'm so sorry you didn't have a good day with your mom....I've been there so I know how hard it is. But one day you will look back and know that you were there for your mom and did the best you could do for her, even if she has no idea. It will bring you a sense of comfort.

i decided i had more kids than my mom this year, so i wanted to do whatever *I* wanted to do today, but yesterday we went to my mom's house to help her move some stuff to storage.. they're working on getting their house prepared to sell. we had some take-out sushi with her and my dad last night.. and i had a photo taken of all of the girls for her...

she bought them these outfits for xmas, and i've been dutifully saving them in the closet til we had pics taken! whew!

the color is off in this scanned version.. but here it is..

Dear Carole and Rick
I am so very sorry for what you must be going thru. It must be absolutely heartbreaking and I feel your pain. Enjoy having your moms even if its just to let them know how very much you love them. You will treasure these moments.

Hugs to you both,
~Kim

I put my Mom on a plane back to Canada today,,,but I also took her for lunch where we yet again got overcharged...well he tried to...Poor Mom waited outside while I made the guy change the bill. I don't think my Mom will ever stay non AI again.

So sorry for all of you dealing with tough mother's days for whatever reason.

Charity, that is a beautiful picture--look at Mia all big girl and tummy timing!! And how stupid of me not to get a pic of all my kids this afternoon when everyone was here.

(Just wanted to mention that I got taken to dinner by one son and actually got a phone call from Hawaii from the other son - currently off his ship before they set out again - with Mother's Day wishes. I could SO bawl my eyes out over them! )
