Life without internet
Anybody thought much about what is was like without all this communciation? I have kids who are so programmed into cell phones, internet, ipods, etc. and then I have an 87 year old mother who lives with me that is just getting the hang of a cell phone (took her forever to understand an answering machine). She keeps talking about taking a computer class. I confess, I still hate cell phones, although I use it when needed. Text messaging is still hard since I can't see the tiny little letter/numbers. My kids laugh at me.. Just got an ipod Nano and rock out to embarass my daughter, but since mom lives with us don't feel comfortable cranking the stereo. SOOOOO...what will it be like in another 20 years. Thoughts.

Heck-I am there-right with ya--but I try
![]() At some point ya gotta break down and get the bifocals/trifocals, etc... I did ![]() Let G'ma take the class. She has my admiration... As a teacher, what I wouldn't give to have a motivated person like her ask me to teach them something... ![]() ...and BTW...my 3 kids probably laugh at me everyday. ![]() So, big deal I am their entertainment. They love me. I can't make them think I am perfect (and I am not), so why even try ? |

I have only been interested in email and/or internet since about 1998, but I can tell you, unequivocally, that I do not want to live without it. Can't believe it has only been 10 years for me, but the gild is not yet off the lily, and I don't expect it ever will be. *sigh*
For me it would be like trying to take away the wheel, or fire. |

I love email and the internet. I love having a discussion at dinner, getting stuck on a question and being able to come into the study and google the answer in 30 seconds. I also love seeing that I have email to be read!! I would rather email than talk to someone on the phone. Always. I've never been a good phone person. I'm the queen of the awkward pause....
![]() I own a very basic cell phone and sent my first text about 3 months ago. I only do that occasionally because it irks me that they cost 10 or 15 cents apiece. I think it has a camera, but I'm not 100% sure. I own nothing that holds music except my radio. And it's plain old FM, not XM. I have burned a few CD's in my time, paying the 89 or 99 cent fee per song. I haven't done that in forever, though, as I'm just not that into music. So we are nano and mp3 less around here. Ryan doesn't even have one. He does have a much better computer than I do, that he paid for, with awesome graphics blahdeblahdeeee... |

Wow. Same year I discovered the internet...I even remember the month too (May 1998). Things changed forever. No more calling the library for info. Just check the internet. Need a vacation rental? Check the internet. Need to know the latest weather report? The internet. Recipes. Shopping.... |

I love the internet - it is really amazing when you think about how much it has changed our lives.
But I can also remember learning to type on an electric typewriter and thinking how cool it was to have the built in correction tape and you did not have to use white-out ! |

I love the internet too, I'm not quite so fond of e-mail, generally what takes 4 or 5 e-mails in my office could be handled with one phone call or walk to the persons desk.
I do finally have a cell phone but I only use it for my convience. Cell phones have really cut down the interaction people have with each other, no one says hello on the street anymore, they all are too busy texting or talking, and don't get me started about the guy in front of me in a line who feels the need to talk as he loads his groceries on the conveyor belt, arrggggghhhhh! |

I love the internet and I LOVE my iPod but some days I do wish that we had less technology....I think mostly when I see a group of kids on cell phones talking or texting and I think why aren't they talking to each other??
![]() I also HATE when people who use their cell phone while driving. It's dangerous enough to be driving a huge vehicle, then to add a cell phone to the mix! As a motorcyclist, I have to say, Shut up and drive already!! (and yes, that includes the stupid blue tooth headset users). |

I have never been fond of endless telephone conversations and having to find an excuse to end them. Email is perfect. Everyone can say what they want to say at their leisure. I also love being able to look up words - Merriam Webster site is almost always open. And my English/Spanish online dictionary also. Travel is SOOOO easy now compared to the old days... I'd much rather see and make my own (usually more cost-efficient) choices than have someone else pick and choose for me.
The internet is kind of a win/lose proposition for introverts like me though. It opens up the whole world to you, but it kind of closes the door to the world right outside your door. I know many of you MUCH better than I know the neighbors I've lived near for 4 years. That works for me, but I'm not sure it's a good thing or a bad thing. EDIT: I also love uncomplicated cell phones, especially for texting, but Ipods and Wii and whatever those berry things are and the teeny little 2-inch monitors I see people punching at in airports are all off my radar.
