Beer for the discerning palate?

Got to admit that I'm not one for lager type beers. You can blame my British upbringing for that. So most American beers are off the table right from the get-go, as are most of the widely expected Mexican beers like Corona and Dos Equis.

My palate goes more towards amber beers, with Newcastle Brown being right up top on the list. Some Mexican beers do make the cut - Dos Equis Amber and Negra Modelo are both acceptable substitutes. And I can quite easily suck on something like Sam Adams if all else fails.

But realistically, what am I going to find available at the RPDC? Or for that matter in town even? Am I going to have to slum it? What are the choices like if I need to head out to a liquor store/supermarket for a private stash?

Last time I was in TJ/Ensenada, seems like the choices were Corona, Corona, or Corona!

this has been my beer of choice lately

i've realized that in this heat, the heavier beers are just that...too heavy. Even tho I wouldn't drink Sol back home, I find it much more refreshing here than a "thick" dark ale.

Oh, for a Newcastle Brown!

These are good darker brews:

Casta

Bohemia

Noche Buena (this is only available at Xmas)

I have a case of New Castle Brown in my fridge at all times. Looking forward to finding something similar while in Playa next week! I will have to check these out, think I will need to stick to something light and easy while in the sun all day on the beach

I also like darker beers- for Mexican darker beer I like Negra Modelo too, and also Leon and Bohemia-none of those three are thick or dark IMO, but then again I love Guiness- now that is thick and dark. but yeah- good luck finding any darker beer than XX or Corona at a AI resort, especially if they just have beer on tap- sometimes one or two of the bars might have bottles, you can ask. if you have a fridge in your room you might have to make a trip to a grocery store so you can at least have one on your deck.

I've never been accused of being a beer snob but I do like different kinds of beer for different occasions.

Hot and sunny on the beach? I like a cold Sol

Spicy food? I like a cold Bohemia

Hanging out at the Bucket? I like a cold Montejo

Of course they are all improved by a shot of Centanario on the side

The problem is availability. Although you can find almost any beer somewhere, you can't find all Mexican beers everywhere. Sol is just ubiquitous. I like Bohemia a lot, but it can be difficult to find. Leon's good too, and, I think, generally more common in the Yucatan. I also lik Corona de Barril, which is also hard to find. It's darker and more full-bodied than regular Corona.

I have to agree with ya, Babaloo. I discovered Leon on my last Playa visit and I love it now. Its got a good flavor, but doesn't "feel" like dark beer. I agree that the heat makes it hard to drink dark, heavy beers.

And BigWally-- don't be fooled by the English pub on 5th, near Calle 20. Its between the Senor Frog's gift shop and 100% Natural. They have a big Guinness sign out front, but oddly enough, they do not serve Guniness. They might have a selection of other darker, heavier, beers, but not Guinness.

You should apply for a job where I work. Its a brew pub and we often start the day with a nice, cold, 16 oz. beer slam. We also normally end the day with another beer slam. And the beer slams in between those times aren't approved by management so they really don't exist...

Sounds like my husband might like it. He's a non-beer drinker but when he does he likes them a bit darker.

Hey Wally, looks like we'll be there the same time? November 1-8 at the Playacar Palace. Where will you be?

Personally, I like Dos Equis Ambar, which is a little darker than the regular Dos Equis lager. Both are good, but I like my suds a bit chewier. It's pretty widely available.
