Merriam-Webster is a pretty good paperback dictionary, but I really prefer electronic translators, like this one: Spanish-English Translator - Franklin TES-118. They only cost around $20 and they're so easy to use and portable.

The difference between the Spanish spoken in Spain and Mexico is negligible if you're at the beginner-intermediate level, probably even less than the difference between American and British English, IMHO. So, take your phrase book.
