a Walk around Sacbe block (sort of a trip report)

The north end of Playa del Carmen–the old north end, the Sacbe neighborhood–is crammed with shops and restaurants. One morning I decided to take a walk around the block, clockwise, starting at the Sacbe gate on Quinta Avenida, and list absolutely every business I passed. I was surprised at how many attractions fill that block, many of which I’d never noticed before. I bet if you make the same walk next month, something will have changed. :lol:

Start: Sacbe gateway, on 5th avenue between 12th and 14th

On the left: Coffee House, La Palapa Hemingway restaurant, Selva y Mar folk art gallery
Right: A silver shop, Sun & Fashion sunglass shop, Casa Partagas cigar shop, a drug store-pharmacy, Sunglass Island, Arte Taxco (another silver shop); upstairs–Rincon de Playa restaurant
Left: Calle Corazon shopping complex (many shops—not listed here), Sur Argentinian restaurant, Jaguar silver shop, Caravan Asian imports, Casa Papagas cigar shop, Xba’al clothing, Diamond International jewelers
Right: fenced vacant lot that contains a small Mayan ruin that is to be restored.
Left: Calle 14 (street ends at 5th). On the corner: Zoo internet café and upstairs– Apasionado restaurant/bar. Arte Azteca silver and crafts, Yaa KayoI souvenirs and shirts, Xlapak restaurant/bar/internet café, Caribbean Glolden Reef travel/tour agency, Success car rental, another souvenir shop, Pizza Trancio. Street. Empty restaurant (used to be La Patria), Los Tulipanes restaurant, El Tukan condotel
Right: Mandarinas Café–Pizza and Champagne, a craft shop with wood carvings, Natural Spa.

Turn right at the corner, continue east on 16th.

Left: (upstairs) Tiburon Playera karaoke bar (downstairs) Mambo liquor store, Plaza mariachi hotel, empty storefronts
Right: Moongate hotel, Chichen Baal Na Kah inn

Turn right at the corner, continue south on 1st (no fair continuing on to the beach! )

Left: Private homes, travel agency, vacant lot, Phantom Paradise hotel
Right: Private homes, La Siesta pizza Phantom Divers dive shop, Blue laundromat,

Villas Sacbe

, Eclipse hotel, Chuchi’s Deli & minimart, Restaurante Da Gabi

Turn right at the corner, continue west on 12th

Left: Pokhara restaurant, Baal nah Kah bed & breakfast, blue Lobster restaurant, Da Bruno Italian restaurant
Right: Restaurant & Hotel da Gabi, Beach Company

Turn the corner, you’re back on 5th

Left: (kitty corner) Fly Bar, Deseo Hotel. On corner: Glass Bar

Right: Beach Company clothing & gear, Media Luna restaurant, Idea Pasta restaurant
