In search of the best guacamole!
Realizing that this is a very subjective subject, where have you eaten guacamole in PDC that you can't wait to go back and eat again? I know, some like it smooth. Some like it chunky. And we all like varying degrees of lime, cilantro, etc. Hence the beginning disclaimer.
In spite of all that, name your restaurant and it's location. I also wouldn't be opposed to the inclusion of some favorite recipes! |

OK, not exactly in Playa, but the best I've had so far is at Gringo Dave's in Tulum. Of course, my judgement could have been swayed by the giant cinnamon pina colada I drank while eating it... but that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :P

Guac
The best Guac is made at The Oasis on 12th across the street from Banamex. It is not a menu item but just ask and Pepe will whip some up. You see, it's fresh every time! It has just the right texture and the ingrediants are perfectly mixed to give it the best flavor.

Guac
I forget the name of the restaurant, but its down the street on 5th around the corner from McDonalds. Its the first on the left side with outdoor seating. They also have a upstairs area for dinning. They mix the quac with some tomatillo sauce. They even gave me the receipe which was nice. Hope you find the place, have fun.

We ate a lot of guac in the past few weeks and I have two favorites: The best came from Mexicana Pescadora on calle 10 between 1st and 5th ave. That is the place that advertises shark filets (didn't try them, but the fresh grouper was great). Coming in a close second was the Playa Maya. I have to say that the Playa Maya wins for the best place to eat guacamole, just for the view alone.

We had a rental house, so went to one of the little grocery stores on 10th or 15th and got avocados, salsa, and fresh limes...couldn't believe how cheaply! We like Herdez salsa casera...a can to about 3 avocados, lime juice, salt, garlic to taste. Also, we found amazing homemade tortillas in those tiny grocery stores..usually sitting warm in a thermal chest. Those with a little Oaxaca cheese and salsa were grand as well. One thing we had trouble finding was tortilla chips to dip the guacamole in...we found them, but were surprised after being used to whole aisles devoted to chips in the states. I've made guacamole for years but it is never as good back home..fresher avocados make a huge difference...

Yes, James is right there are very different perceptions on traditions, guacamole is not a specialty or the main part of a snack, is just one more of the salsas available at the table.
Guacamole goes perfectly well in a Taco de Chicharron. Or if you are lazy or the tortillas are cold then you dip the chicharron directly on the guacamole. But you won't see mexicans ordering just guacamole. |
