Tropical Storm Nate May Hit Mexico and U.S. Gulf Coast as a Strengthening Hurricane: Weather Underground.

Quote:
A hurricane watch and tropical storm warnings are now in effect for the resort cities of Cancun and Cozumel and other parts of the northeast Yucatan. Nate’s rains will not be as heavy here as in Central America, but local totals of 12” or more are possible. High tide at Cozumel and Cancun is at 9:37 pm CDT Friday, and it will be one of the highest high tides to the year, due to the full moon. Tidal range at Cozumel/Cancun between low and high tide is only about 0.6 - 0.8 feet (.18 - .25 meters), so the timing of Nate’s storm surge with respect to the high tide is less important than we see for most locations along the U.S. coast.

Nate is speeding up! Still over land so it's not gonna do much over the next 8 hours. Keep speeding up and it will be well into the gulf by midday Saturday. My plane should be able to fly around it from Houston. Fingers crossed it doesn't drop 10+ inches of rain on Playa and surrounding area in a short time.

From the 5PM NHC advisory (which is essentially the same as the last)

Quote:
Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts.
Strengthening is likely once the center moves over the northwestern
Caribbean Sea tonight and Friday, and Nate could be near hurricane
strength as the center approaches the Yucatan Peninsula.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 50 miles (85 km)
mainly to the northeast of the center.

Mark, what is the easiest source for school closure announcements here? (Not that I expect one for tomorrow, but it brings up the question and Delmy happens to be travelling at the moment...) Like a SEP (or school) Twitter account? Would prefer not to try to fire up the radio and just listen...

It’s been reported that every business must close by 8pm tomorrow night.

I just saw a notification on Facebook that all classes throughout the state will resume as normal tomorrow.

If anyone reading this is in the area, please consider giving temporary shelter to any stray animals in your neighborhood.

I am looking all over the place for the "vespertino" announcement. I have one son in the AM and the other in the PM. Morning classes are a go. It is hard to come by info and I run a school. Soy Playense on facebook usually has someone who posts something. Protecion civil and SEP are slow with their on line announcements.

Commercial centers, I think. Which makes no sense seeing as the heaviest stuff is supposed to be before then.

Thanks. Yeah I had seen a similar announcement but was just wondering, since the question came up, what is the best approach to such these days. (First time I've had kids in school in Playa in 10 years, so of course a lot has changed in the interim.)

That is not surprising (unfortunately). I'd hoped there might be something more official and caught up to the times in terms of technology. But whatever. Thanks!
