Viva Wyndham Maya or Akumal Beach Resort

Looking at both of these for Thanksgiving. Guessing they would be two totally different experiences. Wyndham's location to Playa is appealing and we loved Akumal when we visited there for a day last December. What do the experts think? Any comments or thoughts would be mucho appreciated.

We have been to the Viva twice - once as a couple & the second time with family and friends. Several changes - most good, some not... Not as good now is the beach - BUT, we talked to the General Manager who said quite clearly they are working very hard on getting this recovered. the grounds are well kept. The location on Playacar is great. A BIG plus is having access to the Maya's sister resort (Azteca) right up the beach within walking distance. If getting your rooms through Wyndham, becomve a member of Wyndham by Request (search the web) - it's free!
Good luck!

We have considered both. Your right it's 2 totally different experiences. Obviosly Akumal is much more laid back. However, the snorkeling is awesome. Personally I love Akumal. But, love all the options Playa has to offer. I would stay in Playa, and visit Akumal for the day again. I believe the ABR just had a fire. Maybe that will help the room updating process. Good Luck.

After much deliberation and discussion we have decided on Akumal Beach Resort. Thanks for filling me on the fire GL, just spent the last hour and a half getting all of the info I could on the rebuilding. Looks like they plan on having it done by the first of September, which gives us a 2 1/2 month buffer for our late November arrival.

We spent last Christmas staying right in Playa and had a blast, but are going to try something different this time. More beach and snorkeling, less hangover's. Well maybe not less just not as severe.

Oh yeah, GO WINGS!!!. Looks like the Tiger's might be turning it around as well.
