I didn't go to either of those places, but a friend of mine when to Coba on her own. She said it was quite a hike in but was worth it. That's about all I know.

First, I suggest reading the info provided about each of these ruin sites in the mundo maya section of the read more area of this site (which is found at the top of this page). Second, you are more likely to get a response to info on a topic such as this if you post it in the General Topics forum as opposed to the All Inclusive/Big Resorts forum. However, before posting I suggest using the SEARCH tool (also located at the top of this page) to find what info has already been posted on this subject. Then ask for clarification or additional info if you do not find the answers to all your questions.

We've visited Tulum, Chichen Itza, Coba and Ek Balam. Chichen Itza is the only one we have used a tour to visit. All the others we've done on our own. Both Coba and Ek Balam can be done on your own. Coba is much closer to ASP (about 45 minutes) and can be easily done in a day. Ek Balam is considerably farther away (about 2.5 hours each way) though it can be done in a day if you start off early in the morning. A rental car will be the easiest method to visit Coba or Ek Balam should you choose to do them on your own. Personally Ek Balam is my favorite, then Coba, followed by Chichen Itza and then Tulum. Though they are all magnificent in their own unique ways.
