Summer vacation 2008: Cruise in the Caribbean

I have said before that I will never go on a Cruise Ship (I told Michael). It’s too much people. It’s bad for the environment. It’s a bad way to see a country. And they throw away lots of food.

Both Kari and I wanted to see more of the Caribbean. We have been three times to Playa, and we have been to Cuba and to the Dominican Republic. Now we wanted to see the Small Antilles. It showed up that it was more or less impossible to travel from one island to the other, and the hotels are very expensive. My tour operator told me we should go on a cruise ship. It was less expensive, and we could see more than one island. I said I would never go on a cruise ship. Well, I changed my mind. And Kari said yess!

We are going with Kari’s brother and his wife, and we are leaving home July 4th. Going via New York (Newark Airport) to Puerto Rico. After two nights at the El Convento Hotel in Old San Juan we are going with the Royal Caribbean Cruise line (Adventure of the Seas) to Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua, St. Maarten and St. Thomas, before returning to Puerto Rico. There we will stay at the Gran Melia resort for 5 nights. We will hire a car and see some of Puerto Rico, and we want to take a trip to the island of Culebra.

Now I can’t wait. I will come back with a trip report and pictures.

he hasn't left yet, Andrea- July 4th!

I am anxiously awaiting your trip report, Thor.

We have also always said 'no way' to ever going on a cruise, except maybe an Alaskan cruise. But I see why you are doing it...maybe I will change my mind too!

You have to wait for the pics, but you may look at the two links for the two hotels we are going to. They looks great, don't they?

Take lots of pics - looking forward to your report.
Sounds like a good way to get a taste of all the Islands.

I hope you and Kari have a great time!

Are you at all concerned Kari might become a nun after staying in the convent?

I don't see what everyones' problems are with cruises. They are another way to enjoy the world and all it has to offer. Not necessarily the best way but they can darn sure be pleasurable.

Try to get a cabin with a balcony though. For me that's a must.

Hope you all have a blast. I've enjoyed every cruise I've taken.

Some friends recently spent a week on Culebra and a week on the main island.

They were unimpressed with Culebra and loved the main island. Said Culebra was arid and there were places they thought they would be able to hike, but were unable to.....seems like maybe old Navy ammunition issues, if I remember correctly....

That last part may not be right though.

We enjoyed the cruise we took with my brother and his wife and their friend, Dick Lee. Dick was 72 and had been a tour guide with many cruises before. The ship, one of the Carnival Cruise line, was big and it was also fun. Really good food, good wine selections etc..

We stopped in Cozumel and took the ferry over and Susie, oh wonderful, lovely, beautiful, sexy Susie met us and we went to breakfast at Cueva del Chango followed by an afternoon in Pamuul. Our relatives/friends were impressed

We went ashore on Grand Cayman for awhile, except for my hungover brother. After buying rumcakes, bottles of booze and seeing some things we went back to the ship way early. What a neat time. We got to enjoy the pool area and rest of the ship with hardly any passengers there!!

Have a good time!!

That's a fact. Some of my favorite times on the ship were when it was in a port and most of the passengers were off the ship. It's a whole new experience.
