On to the next thing. We'll be heading to PDC for the first time in two-and-a-half weeks (yay!), and would love some restaurant recommendations. Restaurants and cooking are major hobbies for us, and we're fairly adventurous eaters. We yearn for recommendations for good local restaurants, particularly those doing specifically Yucatan cuisine.

I liked Restaurante Las Delicias at 5th Ave. north of Constituyentes. It's not typically mayan food but good mexican food at a reasonable price and the decoration is very nice. And I like that you can see when they are cooking. They used to have very funny and attending waiters. (Last time I was in Playa is one year ago). For breakfast there is a huge palapa restaurant 1 block north from las delicias. I don't remember the food there but the palapa was impressingly beautiful. I don't remember the name. You will find thousands of good and beautiful places to eat.
Enjoy your vacation. |

we just got back from PDC and wanted to go eat at Yaxche but it looked quite pricey, they had little sticky notes over the prices so it's probably cheaper at other times of the year...but the menu looked quite tasty.
Los Rancheros was terrible...avoid at all cost! Limones (2-3 blocks south of Yaxche) was great, nice setting, reasonably priced...try the shrimp flambe |

Definitely Ajua! They keep a comments books from customers and it contains page after page of rave reviews. Also, they just added live music -- a fabulous band is playing every night.
Their specialities are fresh Wild lobster, USA Angus Beef, whole fish charcoaled on the grill (definitely a Mayan specialty). On Feb 2nd, they are introducing a Mayan specialty menu and a botana bar from 11-5 p.m, daily. Donīt miss this one! See them on Calle 4 between 5th and 10th Avenues, just down from Haagan Daz |

Regarding Yaxche, i'm curious as to what price range is considered 'on the expensive side'. The average entree, for example, is how many pesos?
Thanks to everyone for all of the wonderful recommendations! (And hey, keep 'em coming -- i'm really enjoying everyone's opinions.) 15 days until we leave, and we're now both excited -and- hungry. |

If I remember correctly I had the Carribean shrimp with two beers, no entree & ice cream for desert and my partner had a mixed drink but I dont remember her main meal, and also icecream for desert. Our bill was almost $40us.
Also watch out for service charges-quite a few restaurants in Playa charge you a service charge since a lot of people forget about a tip. Look for the word "servicio" on your bill. Norman |

Yaxche is about 150-250 pesos for appetizer, non-alk beverage and entree and tip depending on taste etc ... other bit pricey but good places are Buenas Aires, 6th tiwx 5th and 10; (get coffee at neighboring Reunion Cafe) Johnny Cairo, 5th near 14th, and Espada's, 5th near 16th, which has a rodeo (9 meats) all-you can eat w/beverage and salad for $150 pesos ... heard good things about Limones and Ajua ... for good food at good prices etc El Chino's, 4th between 10 and 15, is the best is PDC ... oh yes ... thieves will hit your pack on the beach at night so post a guard and PDC was a shark fisihing village until the early 1970s when overfisihing contributed to the eventual tourist boom ... they do feed at night and they ain't all dead so be careful out there...k

Just got back and we agree Yache was VERY pricey and mediocre (although the service was great). Our dinner for two was 900 pesos!!
One of our favourite restaurants was a tiny place on calle 4 at 15th (I think), called the Cafe de la Luna. It's run by two brothers from Sardinia...and the pan-fried fish in white wine sauce with capers was fantastic!!! Dinner for two with beer was 55 pesos. Right next door was our favourite taco restaurant, Taco Bills. Very local, very cheap...pastor tacos (3) were 9 pesos. We often went there for late lunch or a pre-dinner appetizer. Depends how "local" you want to get. Actually there are great local places on Avenue Juarez between 5th and 15th. Another great place was a restaurant on the second floor of the Caribbean Paridise Hotel---a new place on the north end of 5th, at about calle 20. It is run by a Mexican family and I think they are starving for business (their sign is complicated and it's right above another restuarant...the platter for two was excellent and very filling...they really need the business...and we so nice. Bon Appetit |

Towards the top of this thread, someone described a large palapa restaurant 1 block north of Las Delicias. I was in Playa last week and had breakfast there almost every day. It is La Vagabunda, and it is FABULOUS.
I had never eaten there before, and I have no idea why! The food is fantastic, it's very cheap, and the service is excellent. There is an Italian waiter there (sorry, I can't remember his name), who took wonderful care of us. And we are not easy to wait on, as we have four kids, the youngest of whom is 4. There were 7 in our group, but my husband and our 13 year old son ordered 2 entrees every day, and all the kids had smoothies. Our bill was never over $35 US. I highly recommend this place! It's my new favorite restaurant in PDC. And I ate at Ajua! And got an earful. And I have to admit, Bibi, you do sound like the owner. Haven't we met? I thought you stayed away from here. ![]() Becky |
