Mexico, Guatemala, Belice car rental

Thinking about flying into Villahermosa, MX and working our way up to Playa via Guatemala & Belize. Does anyone know if it's possible for us to rent a car in MX and drive it through Guatemala and Belize and return it in Playa? Are you allowed to leave the country with rentals?

While you may ENTER Belize with a rental car, I do not think there is a rental car company that will knowingly allow you to take a car into another country. Should an accident or other incident occur, you might be in a heap of trouble. You could rent a car from Villahermosa to Chetumal, then pick up another rental in Corozal for the trip through Belize. I haven't yet made it across the boarder to Guatemala so I can't advise on car rental options there. Because of the proximity of Tikal, a very popular destination, I would think you could get a rental in Flores. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

Thanks, Michele. That's what I was afraid of. The insurance is pro'ly void if you leave the country with the car, right? The route we were thinking of doing is MX (Palenque/Agua Clara/Agua Azul/Misol Ha/ Caņon de Sumidero/San Cristobal de las Casas), then thru Guatemala to Belize and back up to MX (costa/riviera maya). We may just have to use public transport.

The Mexico Guatemala border used to be a somewhat dangerous place. Perhaps with all of the troops that have been sent there from both sides, it is safer now.

I was near to the border on the Mexican side when I found myself on the wrong end of a bunch of automatic weapons in the hands of a local "militia". Being stopped by the army is not a problem as far as I'm concerned, having a bunch of guys with fully automatic weapons and no uniforms or discernible affiliation picking through your car is a little unnerving.

Babaloo, that is beautiful!! We have some friends who have been working on us for several years now to visit Palenque and the parks down around that area. After seeing your beautiful pictures and also reading Thor Henning's report I have been really excited about trying to get a trip together. I hope we can get it all worked out to go! I know I will have more questions for you guys if it all works out to go....
