Hey Locals... Dialysis facility?

Very shortly Bill (DH) will be on dialysis, 3x week and he doesn't want to start with the home system... We always said that we'd keep up our trips to Mexico until it becomes really impossible...

There are facilities at the Hospitin in Cancun and a center in Merida... We're staying (?) at the Catalonia Royal Tulum (?)... I'm guessing about 2 hours to Cancun, 4 hours treatment and 2 hours back, about 5x... All the many times we've stayed in the area, we never went to Merida... Don't even have an idea where it is except it's not near the sea... Would someone tell us about how long to Merida from Xpu-Ha?... Is it closer than Cancun?... Or does anyone know of a dialysis facility closer... Perhaps in PDC or Tulum?...

I guess we don't want our lives to change so much but we can always stay in Cancun... Arggg!

Another option, does anyone have a kidney to spare?

BTW, this is the Bill that made the trip to Cancun with a 3 hour turnaround to bring Jorge from the Peanut Shelter to New Jersey...

Hey Liz... sorry to hear that Bill will have to be on dialysis... that can't be fun. Unfortunately, Merida is at least 4-5 hours away from where you're staying, so that is not really a better option time-wise, though it's a beautiful city, well worth visiting. If there ARE facilities in PdC, I'd think the Hospiten there would be the first place to check, but I'm guessing that Cancun might be your only option. Sorry!

Hey Liz,

Good news! There are five facilities in Cancun that offer dialysis. One of them in Hospiten in Cancun......much closer than Merida. A link with information & visitor comments is listed below. There are many positive comments!

I am so sorry to hear your dear Bill has to be on dialysis. The two of you have such spirit & we all want you to be able to continue to come back to Playa many, many more times!! ...and be in good health! I hope this helps!

There are options besides 3X/week in center hemodialysis. I have been in dialysis sales for 15 years (Fresenius 2008K machines). When you say you don't want to do home tx, are you referring to peritoneal dialysis? Is home hemo an option? It usually takes about 6 weeks training, including spouse. This option, clinically is the best. Better clearances, fewer meds, pt. feels better, etc. We sell these machines in the US, but I don't know about the logisitics in Mexico. Also, you can dialyze around your own schedule. Usually 5x/week for as little as 3 hrs/day. As long as you get at least or more than 12 hrs/week (which is what standard 3x/week treatments are) you will not be sacrificing clearance. The majority of the 300,000 dialysis pts. in the US do in center dialysis, (I sell a ton of the machines) but it is really unfortunate, because for many pts. their quality of life would be improved greatly by doing home hemo. Having said that the posts recommending "good hospitals" have Fresenius machines, which by far have the largest installed base in the US. I can't help but wonder which model Cancun has. The 2008H is the older 1990's version. The 2008K is the most recent. Good luck whichever route you choose.

Thanks for the info... Bill's hoping that he won't be on dialysis until after our October trip but it doesn't look good... He says we managed when I was put on oxygen so we'll manage his needs... He's having a catherization in a couple of weeks and if he doesn't have any new cardiac problems, he'll be put on the tranplant list... In NJ there's a 4-5 year wait...

Playa4, thanks for your response... There's a peritoneal system that's used while you sleep... I like that route but Bill says he'd rather start on hemo...

I'm sorry to be such a downer but you're all so helpful...

These guys might be able to help. I saw about half way down the page that they have a Dialysis Club (Coming Soon). They say they have agreements with hospitals in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Who knows how often they update their page, so it might be worth shooting them an email.

Cancún Accesible

Here is the paragraph in English:

Dialysis Club (soon)

Cancun access has an agreement with first-level hospitals in the cities of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

The Hemodialysis Unit has the latest technology and comfort. The hospital also has the services of interpreters in several languages.

This Club Dialysis allows Cancun and the Riviera Maya to become a tourist destination accessible to all patients in the world that require dialysis and want to spend their holidays in the Mexican Caribbean.

Wow! That's the company that we use for airport/hotel transfer... They have a van with a ramp that accomodates my scooter... The owner, Judith, is such a lovely person and she speaks English very well... Indeed, I'll drop her a line... Thanks for your response...
