Playa/Puerto Morelos/Playa 6/8-7/2/2008
We stayed in Playa for 3 nights, went to Puerto Morelos for 2 weeks, and then came back to Playa for one last week. Here is a report on the first three days. Not much really happened and the weather wasn't great, so it might not be the best read. I'll add more on the rest of the trip later.
Day 1 We took the ADO bus from the Cancun airport to Playa. As we traveled, the weather went from sunny to very cloudy. By the time we arrived at the bus station, it was raining and since I had not slept at all the night before and had just endured a long and annoying plane ride from MN, with a stop in TX, I was in a really crappy mood. I had never arrived in Playa before, in all the ten years I’ve gone there, in a crappy mood. I felt like the bad weather was literally hovering over my head! I can laugh about it now, but MAN was I in a bad mood! So, we arrive at the lobby of the Maya Bric and I walk up to the desk and this guy is sitting there counting money, and briefly looks up at me and gives me a “not now” glance. I wait and when he’s done with what he’s doing I hand him my confirmation paper for the room. My travel agent had told me he requested that we get a second floor room, as they were nicer. The man at the desk handed me a key and said, “Quatro,” and vaguely pointed over to the area where that room was. I said, “Is it on the second floor?” He shook his head and said, “Quatro.” I asked, “Isn’t there anything on the second floor? My travel agent said he requested something up there.” He shook his head and said, “Quatro.” We took our luggage over to room #4 and went in. It wasn’t a super crappy room but it wasn’t super nice, either. However, the A/C wouldn’t work. I went back to the desk and said, “The A/C doesn’t work.” He said I hadn’t paid for A/C. I said that indeed I had. I told him I paid $150 and he showed me his spread sheet on his computer that read “$120.” I knew darn well I had paid $150, as I had written out the check myself. He refused to agree with me. He refused even to argue with me anymore about it. I went back to the room and retrieved my paperwork. I pulled out the e-mail that my travel agent had sent me that stated we would have A/C. I marched back to the office and showed it to the guy and he finally, very reluctantly, handed over the remote to the A/C. I don’t have any photos of the Maya Bric. I can tell you that unless it’s the only affordable rooms in town, I won’t stay there again. I’m used to a polite reception at the hotels I stay at in Mexico. I thought at first that maybe that guy and I were experiencing a language barrier, but when he began arguing with me over how much I had paid, we seemed to understand each other well enough. Furthermore, the A/C, once we finally got it, was so crappy that we ended up sleeping with our heads at the foot of the bed in order to feel the feebly cool air that it generated. All in all, I found the Maya Bric to be a pretty bleak place. The weather was too crappy for the beach that day, so we went straight to the Beer Bucket. We had a laptop from JimmyMN that needed to go to Jez. We drank quite a few beers that afternoon and hung out with Jez and Judy and Steve and Gary. We had dinner at Carboncito’s. I had the chicken and poblano tacos and a margarita. Then we went to La Rana, where we hung out some more with Judy and Steve. When I tripped up the step that goes into the place and knocked my head on the bar, I figured it was probably time to go back to the hotel and get some sleep. We stopped on the way and got a huge Butterfinger blizzard on the way. Hey! At least I wasn’t in a bad mood anymore!!! Day 2 We went to Bad Boys and for $8 got two chairs and an umbrella. We did the usual, sunning and swimming and drinking buckets of beer. I even had a margarita, which was pretty tasty. The sun came and went between bouts of rain. Here are a couple of photos: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After showering back at the hotel, we had slices of pizza from Pizza Pazza and then went back the Beer Bucket. There we drank with Gary and Steve. Steve kept teasing me about my being “feminine” and wearing a “pretty dress” and even bought me a shot of tequila! Oh, Steve! You crack me up! We ventured north in order to find La Pummarola but could not find the place, so we had a couple of beers at Pinche Gringo’s and then came back south and ate at La Famiglia. I had a calzone classico, which was delicious! We had Dairy Queen again for dessert and were back at the hotel and to bed by 9 PM! Day 3 We had breakfast at Hot. Yum! I had a big orange juice, a waffle, bacon, and an espresso. I love breakfast. We went to Bad Boys for another day at the beach but it wasn’t long before it became obvious that the weather was not going to cooperate. We fought it out on our beach chairs for awhile but ended up retreating up into the bar, where we continued to drink beer: ![]() Corey had some shrimp cocktail. At one point the storm got so wild that we were getting wet from the rain, even though we were at the innermost end of the bar!!!! We did get to hang out with my friend Cindy, though: ![]() After we cleaned up at the hotel, we went back AGAIN to the Beer Bucket. We spent the night there, drinking beers with Jez, Gary, Paulo, Sharky, and Judy and Steve. Good times! We had dinner at Babe’s. I had the chicken satay, which was good, but not as good as the sesame chicken and noodles that Corey had! Yum!

The three weeks that follow were MUCH better than those first three days. The weather even cooperated starting with our first day in Puerto Morelos!
Sue cheered up as well! Did she mention she was crabby? ![]() I was kinda scared of her that first day!

This was our 10 year anniv. so that's why we decided, about 9 years ago, to stay for three or more weeks. It still wasn't enough!

Geez, I must have come across sounding like a jerk. The first few days weren't THAT bad. I mean, the weather was mostly crappy and the Maya Bric was a purgatory, but I did have fun seeing my Playa friends and eating out and drinking lots of beer!!!!
![]() I'll try to work on the Puerto Morelos part today. |
