I am really enjoying your TR. Great photos of the family, and thank your wife for the foodie pics. What is up with those tiny beers? Maybe they don't want them to get warm!!
We may run into you in town on Friday or Saturday. Have fun!

Post Grand Riviera Princess Trip Report 07/17/08 - 07/27/08

Day 5: It's raining. We just realized that it's not just a bypassing rain shower this time. Tropical Storm Dolly is passing through the area and putting a big soak on the Riviera Maya.

She's passed over us now, we're just getting the remains. But it was wet enough to cancel our trip back into town. Even our daughter Lauryn and her friend Bailey went to the Kids Club today since the beach is closed and occasional thunder and lightning have chased them from the pool.

Guess what the adults are stuck doing today?
Awww... poor us!

Tonight we had dinner at the Italian restaurant Mamma Mia. In spite of the fact that the soups were served luke warm (in all of the restaurants we've been to so far, not just this one) this is probably the best restaurant we've been to so far.

Beef Carpaccio
Bruschetta
Tomato and mozzarella
Shrimp Bisque
Minestrone
Chicken Gnocchi
Lasagne
Veal Medallions
Veal Francese
Pepperoni Pizza
Mushroom Risotto
Dessert

Jim and Evonne purchased a "good" bottle of wine:

Gonzalo was our waiter. Super nice! Highly recommended restaurant! Yum!

After dinner we watched the variety show in the theater across from the restaurants. There is a bar (but there was a long line) and a few waitresses to bring drinks if you prefer. The show was cute. There was a break dance crew, a clown, a couple who did tricks on rollerblades, a juggler and a contortionist that did really weird things with his body.

Lauryn loved it (although she said the contortionist "freaked her out") and wants to go to tomorrow's show. Not sure what that is yet.

Jordan missed it because he was in his favorite place:

Maybe he will make the next one.

Couple of extra things that I wanted to mention. First, remember that you are coming to Mexico. Don't expect everyone to speak English (or French or Italian, etc.). We've met people from all over the US but also people from France and Spain and England. Trust me when I tell you that they speak English a lot better than we speak Spanish (although we give it a good try and we're learning more and more every day) but we've met Americans that are all out of sorts because everyone doesn't speak English. Give them a break; you're in their country. They try their best and so should you. Bring a translation book with you, if it helps.

If you are going to bring a laptop, bring an ethernet cable. Wireless access is available in the Platinum Lounge but you will need a cable in your room. If you forget, don't panic. You can borrow one from the lounge but you have to leave a $20 deposit which will be returned when you leave. Same for DVD's. You can get whatever you want for the night but you have to leave a $20 deposit. Not a big deal because they give it right back when you return the item but it's just something to note so that you're not surprised.

(BTW... I signed on in the room yesterday and forgot to hook up the ethernet cable. We're wireless here. Yeah!)

Money: Bring lots of singles for tipping. The hotel won't make change for you and it's great to walk around with a few singles for tips when you get good service. There's no need to exchange money. The exchange rate is an easily calculable 10 to 1 and you will usually get your change from vendors and stores in pesos. Just move the decimal once to the left and you know how much you have in dollars. 100.00 pesos is 10.00 dollars. Easy. If you bring travelers checks and need to get cash, do it in town at a bank (where they don't charge a fee) rather than at the hotel where they do. A dollar a day for the housekeeper and the person that restocks the fridge (when he needs to add something) is very much appreciated by them.

The floors around the resort are marble and even some sidewalks are very slippery after it rains. Wear your watershoes, sneakers or rubber-soled shoes when it's wet. I've seen quite a few people hit the deck on wet floors! Also, be careful in your room. These floors can get slippery when wet as well.

Day 6 (Man, this is going by so fast!): The sun is shining again! Hurray! We didn't make any plans because we weren't sure of the weather but it turned out to be a gorgeous day. After a workout and breakfast, we decided to go into Playa del Carmen again. Because there were some cancellations due to people who would rather spend the day on the beach, we were able to catch the free shuttle at the last minute. We got there around 12:30 pm and caught the 6:00 pm shuttle home.

We took a walk on the beach, did a little shopping, made another pitstop at Wal-Mart for some necessities like lotion, wine and kiddie pajamas and spent some quality time at Hotel Basico, relaxing on the roof in the "cool" tub.

So refreshing on a hot and humid day. And what a view! Wow! Five minutes from Heaven!

After cooling off, we went to the No Limits beach bar where I finally got an authentic Mexican shrimp taco!

Delicious! And we had a few drinks to wash them down!

We got back to the resort barely in time for dinner reservations at The Grille but by the time we all changed and met up again and caught the tram back to the main building, we would have missed our reservation. So instead we decided to enjoy Spain Night at the buffet where we wouldn't be on a time clock. We brought wine and pomegranate tequila that we bought in town and the buffet was better than usual.

Lauryn came down with an ear ache this afternoon:

Probably from doing this:

So after dinner we took Jordan to the Kids Club and then gave Lauryn some ear medicine and put her to bed.

Tomorrow is Golf Day!!!

Hi Darryl,
I hope the weather clears up for you guys. But it looks like you guys are having a really good time thus far

I have two questions...
Do you think that a 17" laptop will fit in the room safe?
Do you need a special code to tap into the wireless connection? I know that it's free for Platinum, but do they give you a code at check-in, or is it only available in the lounge?

Hi, are you saying we can use ethernet connection in the room? Is there a charge, or is it only for wireless. I would think ethernet would be faster anyway. Thanks for the great report too!

Hey there Darryl, Hope you and the family are staying dry. We're all thinking of you! I am enjoying your trip as we have now changed our plans and are bringing our kids, so "family" trip reports are ones that I especially enjoy.

Looking forward to following your adventures!

A 17" laptop would fit into the safe. It's pretty wide.
We did need a code that we got from the "internet" guy. You would have to ask for it since they don't assume that you bring a laptop. The concierge wrote our name down and the internet guy left us a login ID.

We're connected in the room by ethernet. I think you can get wireless but it's a crapshoot and we are on the third floor, far from the lounge. We do connect wirelessly in the lounge, using the same login codes that we use in the room.
As far as speed, they seem to be about the same. No charge for either, outside of the refundable ethernet deposit.
