Mrs.Ontario,
We are still updating daily while we are here. Unfortunately the messgaes are limited by a certain number of words so we continued in different messages under the same thread. We're still here! Here are links to all four posts:

Hi Darryl,
How did Jim and Evonne like Dolphin Adventure? Which one did they go to?We have reservations for that and I am curious to hear feedback.

It doesn't look like you guys are bursting into flames from the heat...I thought it would be unbearably hot this time of year.

Darkin, glad you are having a great time. Your post made me laugh about the churro. My son refused to leave playa also without having one. We found a cart vendor selling them, $2.00 later he was a happy kid.

Hi, Kre8tiv1.
Evonne absolutely beamed about the Dolphin Adventure. I'm not sure which one they did but they are on their way home as we speak so I will be sure to ask asap. She says she can't wait to do it again so it was really good. Jim went with her reluctantly but he said he had a good time as well. I can tell you that they did the most interactive one where you swim holding two dorsal fins and they toss you in the air. I think it was $149.00. There's another experience that costs $99 and ther is also a package where you swim with manatees. Have fun if you decide to do it!

Yes - it is HOT. But all of the restaurants, your room and the lounges are air conditioned and, of course, you are surrounded by water. Your room card turns the lights on and off but the air conditioner stays on all the time so don't worry; just when you think you're going to melt, you will find some relief!

Post Grand Riviera Princess Trip Report 7/17-7/27/08

Well, we're back in Jersey now but I'm picking up where Darryl left off. I think it was Day 9.

Day 9: Today we met on the beach to take family photos. We had arranged with one of the photographers to meet us at 10:00 am and we all wore white shirts and denim. Francesco was our photographer and he was wonderful. He had some really great ideas. Here are some random ones that we took after Francesco left us unsupervised:

(The W is for West Windsor. Not as scary as you think! Ha!)

It was really a lot of fun to do. After that, Jim and Evonne went off to their Dolphin adventure, we took Jordan back the Kids Club (his happy place!) and the rest of us hung out at the beach. Then Lauryn wanted to hang out with Bailee on her last day so she went to the pool and Darryl went up to the room to take a nap. It was a slow lazy day and we basically did nothing but hang out and relax.

They held another Platinum Seafood dinner on Friday night but since we were disappointed the first time around, we decided to keep our reservations at the Tempanyaki (Hibachi) at Miso. So glad we did. Although it seemed to take an unusually long time (Lauryn was trying to get to the Broadway Show), the food was fabulous.

Shiitake Miso Soup
Fried Rice
Seafood entree
Filet Mignon entree

I took Lauryn to the Broadway show just before dessert then came back to finish up.

I chose the Fried Ice Cream which wasn't what I expected and since Dad and I got them with no spoon, they were partially melted mush before we got a chance to eat them.

Darryl got the fried banana and didn't really enjoy it either. Mom got the fruit in midori but was disappointed when it was just canned fruit cocktail. So, the dinner was great but save those extra calories or stop in at the buffet to choose your own dessert.

By the way, Jim and Evonne never showed up for dinner. We found out later that they stayed in Playa and partied all night long. I'm sure they can recommend some nice party places. I'll be sure to ask if they have any suggestions.

Day 10 (Our very sad last day!) : We wanted to go back to Playa for a few last minute souvenirs and to pick up a new favorite: Pomagranite Tequila. Yum! (In Mexico, they call the Pomagranite a Granada in case you request it and no one knows what you are talking about). We talked our way on to the shuttle bus since we didn't have a reservation (Just an FYI... they will let you on with no problem if they have room, which they usually do). In Playa, Dad, Darryl and I found a shop that makes different types of flavored tequila called CASA COFRADIA. We tasted a few flavors and ended up bringing home Grenada and Tamarind. We thought that the Cofriada brand was better than the La Pinta brand but La Pinta is easier to find. Either way, you can't go wrong!

We met up with Jim and Evonne who were spending their last day on Mamasita Beach (per Alberto's recommendation) and had lunch at a local restaurant called LA GUADALUPANA. Good prices, authentic food, GREAT service. They treated us like locals. If you don't know what to get, ask! They will steer you in the right direction but there's nothing bad on the menu. (Please be patient with them. It's a local place and they do speak a little English but they mostly cater to natives. With our limited Spanish and their limited English, we were able to communicate fine. But just keep that in mind. It's worth the food experience.)

We picked up a few more souvenirs for home and caught a cab back to the resort. (The last shuttle bus doesn't get back until 6:00 pm - too late for today!) Stopped at the photographer's booth to pick out our pictures. That was the hardest part of the whole trip. Fernando took some awesome pictures.

We narrowed it down to a painfully expensive 16 pictures and split the cost. But we still did pretty well considering there's no sitting fee and no pressure. But it was a great way to document such an awesome vacation.

On our last night, we ended in the same place we began but that was not by design. This was the first reportable "bad" experience that we had with the resort. Mom made 7:00 reservations for Mamma Mia for our last a la carte meal as that was our favorite. The concierge didn't print out the ticket but told her it would be delivered to the room later in the day. (It happened to Darryl and I when we fist got our reservations so we didn't think anything of it.) A few hours later, Mom went down to ask if the receipt had been printed because she hadn't received it. She was told that she didn't have a reservation and that there were no more available for Mamma Mia that night. What?!? So, a little angry and disappointed, she settled for what was left which was Sushi at Miso at 8:00. Since we were at Miso just last night, we were all a little disappointed about that but decided it was better than nothing and, anyway, we would be getting a different menu.

Darryl stopped by to confirm the reservation once more at about 7:30 and, again, we were told we have no reservation. But Mom had a receipt this time with all of our room numbers on it. She took it back to the concierge who found it under another person's name. But the concierge confirmed that the name didn't matter, we still had the reservation.

Got to Miso at just before 8:00 and... guess what? No reservation!!! Ok, this is getting crazy!!! So we showed the receipt to the hostess who agreed that it did look like we made a reservation. She said to wait for a few minutes and the she would try to accomodate us. We waited about 25 minutes (standing right next to an empty 8-top, mind you, set for a group that never showed up) while they made up another table for us. That 8-top stayed empty the entire time we were in the restaurant. What the??? Anyway, they finally got us seated (the hostess was really nice, they were just not very organized) and we ended up having some great sushi.

Spring rolls and shrimp app
Sushi for the table (DELICIOUS!!!) We got THREE of these and couldn't finish them all!
Caramel Custard Dessert (very flavorful!)

Lauryn wanted to catch the circus show which turned out to be really good. A lot of nice talent was displayed:

We picked up Jordan from his last night at the Kids Club and a very nice couple took a picture of us in front of one of those interesting statues along the walkway on our way back to the room. I guess it was our goodbye shot.

While Darryl and I repacked our suitcases, the kids watched Herbie Fully Loaded in spanish. (Didn't matter, they've seen it so many times, they knew exactly what was going on!)

Then Darryl took a jacuzzi on the balcony and it was time for a good night's sleep to catch our flight in the morning!

The only complaints that we could make are these: Room service is REALLY slow. We ordered a pizza and soda for Jordan so that he could go to the disco with the kids rather than go to dinner with us one night. Darryl placed the order at 6:15 and we were told that it would take 20 minutes. Plenty of time because our reservation were't until 8:00, right? Well, the pizza came after we left the room. Darryl took Jordan to the buffet at around 7:45 just to get him something to eat before he dropped him off and it was in our room when we returned after dinner. That happened TWICE! Heard someone on the beach say that they ordered room service at 9:30 one night and the order didn't arrive until after midnight. I think they just don't know how to handle backups.

Also, we were in room 5209 and, while we didn't have the shower leakage problem that most people complained about, but most times it took several flushes for the water to circle all the way down in the toilet. It was annoying but a really small thing. We never even bothered to complain about it.

Otherwise, I have to say we had a fabulous time. I'm so sorry it's all over. And yes, we would definitely stay at the same resort again in the future, but I would only stay in the Platinum Suites. The amenities are worth the extra charge.

For those of you who are on your way, best of luck to you and we sincerely hope that you have as great a time as we had. Maybe we will see you next year!

Casi & Darryl

Hi Casi,
Thanks for picking up where Darryl left off. I'm really disappointed that we will miss you by only a few days, as we are practically neighbors here in Jersey (Exit 4). Thanks for the input on Dolphin Adventure. I love the pics of you guys. What a great idea! It sounds like you all really enjoyed your vacation. I hope the weather here today didn't cause for major delays getting home.

MLMD, we are a family of 5 arriving on Tuesday. Are you traveling with teens by any chance? Where are you coming from?

kr8tiv1 would have enjoyed meeting neighbors at GRP. Casi actually works near exit 4 at the Commerce Bank complex.

We were in a holding pattern for almost 30 minutes near Maryland because of the weather in PHL before the pilot came on and said that we were being diverted to Harrisburg because we used up our holding fuel ( everyone on the plane sighed when this announcement was made). There was a lot of turbulence, in fact the lady sitting behind me lost her lunch, and the barf bag ended up ripping in the bottom, what a mess. As we were about to approach Harrisburgh the pilot came on and said PHL had been reopened and that we would not have to divert to Harrisburgh (everyone applauded).

Enjoy your vacation, you'll have a blast.
