We stayed at ABR the first time we stayed in Akumal (2005). We love Akumal and have returned, but stayed elsewhere. ABR is small, worn, and the food was blah. The restaurants in Akumal are excellent and I'd rather rent a condo or villa and eat at the restaurants than ABR. Just wasn't my "cup of tea" either.
Also, when we were there, I had booked ABR on my own. Hurricane Emily came and the people who had an Apple package got NO help from Apple getting out early. A friend had to pay $2200 to fly home, had travel ins. and never received any reimbursement from Apple. I heard several horror stories about Apple that year. One reason I book my own air and hotel--I have control. Last edited by summer05; 07-31-2008 at 08:54 PM.. |

Only Apple carries the ABR, Funjet does not. If you didn't see it listed, it was probably sold out or not offered with whatever a "hot deal" is.

Your friend must have had a terrible travel agent! While it took a while to handle because there were SO many claims, it was not impossible to get the insurance to cover trip interruption. And there were horror stories about ALL tour operators, online discounters, airlines, hotels, etc, it wasn't just Apple. You might have heard more about Apple but that's because they have more clients in Riviera Maya than any other company. Immediately after Emily, I got an e mail from someone I didn't know, the father of a young girl who was traveling with her boyfriend and staying in the Tulum area. The man was beside himself trying to get his daughter home, came upon this web site and e mailed me as a last resort. She was booked with Expedia and had flown Frontier Airlines. Frontier wouldn't talk to him because the kids were booked with Expedia, they said he had to go through them. He had tried to make return arrangements to get her home and Expedia wouldn't even answer the phone. When he finally got through, they told him there was absolutely nothing they could or would do for him at that time. Basically she was on her own. I was able to work with Frontier and did get her home, even though I had nothing to do with the whole thing and it wasn't my client. I'm just trying to prove a point that it was more than just Apple that dropped the ball on some people - and being on your own in the situation I described - was not such a good idea!
