Puppy Dilemna...What Would you Do?

So I fell in love yesterday...the most adorable little cockapoo puppy made me melt. I want him...

But...

Here's the dilemna. We're off to Mexico in just a few weeks. If we take him home now, we'll have to board him at the kennel during that time at $20 a day, or find someone who will watch a puppy who is not yet trained for almost two weeks.

Charlie is the voice of reason, saying it's not fair to us and the puppy to buy him now. Other cute puppies will be out there after our vacation. I know he's right, but, I want this one. Unfortunately, my kids came with me and they're in love too. Lucky Charlie, he was working, so he is not in love...yet.

What would you all do in our shoes? Go and pick him up today, or wait?

Can you arrange with the puppy owner to "hold him/her for you" untill you come back? Perhaps give them an advance to show you are serious about coming to get him/her when you return?

Pick him up today...life is short, solutions are easy, puppies are flexible.

Remember...you said, "So I fell in love yesterday...the most adorable little cockapoo puppy made me melt. I want him..."....

It doesn't happen nearly enough in our lives...love, melting and adorable puppies being wanted by responsible parents........\

Pick him up today.

(sorry Charlie)

I think it depends on where the puppy is
If the puppy is in the pound, then you should consider getting him and then board him. If he is at a private home, tell them you will buy the puppy when you get back from your trip, and give them a deposit (if you trust them). There are some people that will train your puppy for you--that may take care of two problems at one time?
You could also get the puppy, take him home and have someone watch him at your house while you are gone

Ahh puppy kisses, hugs and snuggles are wonderful

Awww...thanks all for the input. He is in a kennel right now. I told the owner our situation yesterday, and she said she'd gladly take him back while we are gone, but would charge us $20 a day for boarding. She would continue any training we start. I didn't ask her about putting a deposit on him and having her keep him until we get back. We'll see...

Here's What We Did

So we agreed that we would go back and look at him today, and if he was still there, we'd be ready to bring him home. And well, you guessed it. He was already gone to another home. We briefly looked at his two brothers, but the second part of the agreement was that if he was not there, we'll wait until after our vacation. We had to pull ourselves away from those two boys and get int the car. The owner of the kennel will try to help us find a pup that will be ready in August. It wil be a long wait, but in the meantime, at least we can get things prepared in our house for a new arrival. I feel right now, but hopefully this story will have a happy ending.

Honestly Eileen, I think it was for the best. Bringing a new puppy home is a lot of work, and there is bonding time that needs to be accomplished as well. Your baby needs to get used to you, his new surroundings, etc. just as much as you need to become accustomed to him. With going away in three weeks, there would be a total disruption of his routine, a routine that he was just getting used to. Then you'd pick him back up a week later and disrupt THAT routine as well. Lots of overload for a little pup. I think it was all meant to be this way. Once you're home you can concentrate on finding the right puppy for you and be home to get him trained and give him lots of attention. You'll also be able to take your vacation without worrying about how your little boy is doing.

Good luck.

I couldn't have said it better. Getting settled with your baby will also mean that any dog that is introduced to the family will hopefully not be "jealous", but part of the new family unit.

Sorry for your disappointment, Eileen, but as has been said, it's for the best.

And besides..... you get to see me next Sunday, so that'll MORE than make up for it. I'm totally freakin' adorable, and I'll even lick your cheek if you want me to!!

I can't lie Karen! You're very cute! And I got lots of puppy licks yesterday and today, but there's no comparison to a Nerak lick! Are you celebrating something today, BTW?

Everything happens for a reason, Eileen You'll find your new baby when the time is right- don't you worry! Now you'll have a worry-free Playa vacation- no missing the new puppy But definitely take Nerak up on her offer- just make sure someone has a camera ready

Oh trust me Sara, Nerak has treated to me to a few face licks in her time, and they've been well documented here too! And we're still friends too!

And thanks to all of you for your kindness and sweet thoughts. I know you're all right. The right puppy is out there, or will be when we are ready. As fun as it would be to have him now, it would be very hard on him and us to have to leave him just as we're getting settled. It was not too smart on my part to go looking at puppies before we were really ready, but what can you do. My kids are both very disappointed, especially Kelsey who will be leaving for her sophomore year of college right after we return from vacation. I hope we'll be lucky and find the right pup before she goes.
