iPhone Applications

Several of us have iPhones, more will over the next year. Now that there is a iPhone Apps store with >750 applications for it, I thought a thread where we could share which ones we have used and what we think of them might be helpful.

I have an original 4 gig iPhone, and I have over a gig available for more applications or content.

Right now I have Pandora and the Bloomberg app. Bloomberg gives one access to their news, market index data for the world, a list of "My Stocks". It is more comprehensive than the little Stocks program that came with the phone.

I like both of these.

I have a 32 GB iPod Touch. It's not much space left (I have a lot of music on it) , but I have two of the new Applications. Facebook and Spanish (Prasebook). Facebook is a must for Facebook users. Spanish is good. It speaks the prases. But isn't this European Spanish?

Steps app can calculate the number of steps, average speed, total distance, and total calories burned. This application uses the device motion sensors to calculate your body movements. It also calculates your stride from your height and the number of calories burned from your weight. To ensure the best accuracy, it is recommended to put your iPhone or iPod touch in your pockets or wear it at your waist. Price: $1.99.

This one sounds neat. The review is by a fellow on another forum I follow

Shazam

This program is a perfect example of what a wonderful platform the iPhone is becoming. Shazam is able to take a short musical audio sample through the iPhones mic, upload it to a server, and then the sample is identified and sent back to the iPhone, complete with artist info and links to the iTunes store.

Our family was playing mini golf when a song came over the outdoor sound system that my daughter liked, but did not know. She launched Shazam and held her iPhone up in the air towards the speaker. Sure enough, it recognized the song and provided info about it. How cool is that? And it's free! ~hltr

Jed Stremel, Director of Mobile at Facebook, just announced at our Mobile Web Wars Roundtable that Facebook’s iPhone/iPod app has reached 1 million users.

Facebook is currently ranked as the 6th most popular free application on Apple’s App Store, and has been among the store’s top applications since the store’s launch on July 10. We posted initial download numbers for the apps soon after the store’s launch (Facebook had around 9,000 downloads at the time). Since then, Apple has changed its policy and no longer posts the number of downloads for each app, so we need to rely on developers to report their figures.

We’ve asked MySpace for their corresponding numbers. Off hand, John Faith, GM and VP of Mobile for MySpace was able to tell us that their mobile WAP site sees 1.7 million uniques a day (users can access the MySpace WAP site without using the native application). This is certainly a large figure, but it doesn’t provide a direct comparison. We’ll update the post when we can get more comparable numbers.

At Facebook’s f8 conference this week, the company announced that it would soon be open sourcing its iPhone application, so we can expect to see a number of copy cats in the near future.

My guess is that at least 30% of the common daily expressionism here is not used/ understood in Spain!

I've got a shuffleboard application that's just the most fun thing ever. It's like the shuffleboard game you play in the pub, not the retirement home and it is perfect for the touch feature. I think it's like four bucks. Beware. It is very, very addictive.

Hubby has this on his iPhone. So far it has worked great. Very cool app.
