It would depend on what your looking for, the Grand Porto is in town and right on the beach, the Tequila is about a $5.00 cab ride od a 1/2 hour walk from town and is across the street from the beac, about a 5-6 min. walk or a couple of min ride on the shuttle bus. The Tequila is a little more laidback. We have stayed at the Tequila 3 times in the last 4 years and find the food and service to be excellent, keep in mind that the Tequila will be closed from Aug to Nov. for reno's. I hope this helps. Enjoy your stay in PDC. Cheers

We stayed at the Gran Porto Real last year and are going again in September. I saw the Kids Club, but really wasn't paying that much attention to it since our kids are grown.

We really enjoyed the location of the Gran Porto Real. Each night, it was an easy 2 block walk to 5th Avenue. The food, pool, and service was great. The nice part of the beach is a short walk over to the Royal Playa Del Carmen. I don't know anything about Rui Tequilla, but would recommend the GPR as a good AI.

thanks so much...the kids thought the Riu Tequila looked more lively, so that's where we'll go. Reminds me of the saying that a bad day at the beach is better than a good day at the office !!!

Went to gran porto real Years ago on Open Week(mid 90's) when it was just Porto REAL). The Resort was nice but we were not treated that well. I've never gone back There but have gone back to Playa many times.

Guess who gets my vote.

Tequila looks like it would be a fun stay.

It also depends on when you plan to go. The Tequila will be closing down at the end of this month for a multimillion-dollar renovation, and will not reopen until right before Christmas.

That said, I have been to the Tequila twice in the last 2 years, and her sister hotel the Yucatan 3 years ago. The Riu Hotels are excellent properties! The Tequila is much more kid-friendly, IMHO. It's not directly on the beach, but has it's own beach area between the Yucatan and the adjacent Riu Palace. However, since the Rui Hotels have the BEST all inclusive food in Playa (again, IMHO) the 5 minute walk to the beach is a MUST! They also have a shuttle that runs all day long between the hotel lobby and the beach club, which is great when you are coming back from the beach with tired little ones.

One word about the beach: The seas were very rough over my holiday in May 2008. Every day was a Red Flag day. I'm sure people that have been there between May and now can (hopefully) chime in and let us know how the surf has been more recently. They have large sandbags in front of the beach to protect from the devastating erosion that has effected the entire Playacar area (I hear the erosion in Cancun is terrible as well), and there were some areas behind the sandbags that were rather calm, almost like wading pools. It was actually kind of cool when big waves would crash on the sandbags and send a nice, cooling spay over the top of them! I posted pictures the beach conditons in another thread, so just search on my user name to find them...

One minor correction: Renovations are set to begin August 20 and run through mid November. Here is a thread over at Riu Bambu that covers it:

I was at the Tequila in June. Fantastic... only possible way to describe it one word. The kids club & staff were great, food was outstanding as always, beer was always cold, the walk to the beach was a minor inconvenience given the ammenities the Tequila provides. A $5 taxi ride to town isn't that bad.

The beaches were a bit hammered & the surf was up & strong, so the girls chose to stay at the pool instead of the beach which hacked me off but I went along with it.

All things given, I'd book at the Tequila again & again & again... provided I can ever afford to go back. With today's prices for everything... .

I like the Real simply for the closeness to town. The beach has improved lately also.
