Frankly, horticulture bores the Hell out of me, but I've always done what I was told in the fetch-and-carry and shlep departments until lately. I didn't mind it. Pretty much mindless and relaxing. Always enjoyed the time afterwards on the patio, or in the sunroom, with a bottle or two of wine.

Does she work full time and spend hours in the yard every day? if so, she is a better person than I am.

If I were retired, I would welcome the work, but both of us work full time, and it's just a pain.

And Don would never agree to hire a lawn service....or a maid either, darn it.

We've been retired just over 5 years now. She always worked a lot in the garden, but nothing like the hours she puts in now, of course. Mind you, until about three years ago, she also had a 40' X 60' allotment vegetable garden as well.

My stepdad is a big gardener and they never did much with their yard until he retired a few years ago- you should see it now, flowers everywhere and a huge vegetable garden, he really enjoys it.

I don't mind the work, it's more that there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day. Oh well.

I can't argue it's not nice to be able to sit on the deck with a bottle (or two) of wine and enjoy the fruits of our labour. Okay, MY labour, Don is too busy playing ball and golfing and fishing.

We used to use a lawn service but to save a little $$ replaced our dead mower this spring with a new one and I have become the official mower. I think of it as a great work-out and get great satisfaction looking at the freshly cut grass.

Good for you! We have always done our own yard work though at times I have been tempted to hire someone. When I think of how much it would cost me, and how many things I could have for the same money, I always end up changing my mind. Same with painting and other DIY repairs on the home.

Hubby mows the front and back lawn takes about 2 hours we have a big property and I do the rest except hubby also trims the hedges which is not an easy job as the side one is over 15ft.high . I don't envy him but he loves the exercise and we both know someday soon someone else is going to have to do it.

We have two walk behind mowers and each grab a mower and we're done in an hour. Neighbors on either side have riders and it takes them about the same amount of time. I like the looks of a lawn done with a walk behind as compared to the rider.

we have a once a month housekeeper and it has been the BEST thing EVER... we still have to do daily/weekly cleaning, but she and a friend come once a month and do the deep down ooky cleaning that kept eluding us... she comes one Saturday morning a month and I "disappear" and do something with a friend while Mike stays home with the kids... bonus in more ways than one!

yes, but you have children. We just can't justify it, just being the two of us. And we are chea ...er, thrifty!

I just tell myself that it is good exercise!

Plus I would be the type who cleans before the maid gets there.

I don't think of it as cleaning before the cleaners arrive, I think of it as enabling the professionals to do their job!

EXACTLY!! You don't clean so much as pick up all the crap that's not supposed to be sitting on the counters anyway, so she can clean the counters! And get rid of the stacks of mail in the study so she can thoroughly dust the desk! That's actually one of the perks--it forces us to sort and pick up stuff that we might ignore for just one or two (or 72) more days...

[quote=licuadora;1156170]While mowing this morning I began to wonder who at your house mows?

I do the mowing and weedeating.Takes 25 minutes.
Dollbaby scoops the poop from the two labs
out back on a nightly basis.
Have helped her hold the bag for it but can't
seem to do it to her satisfaction.
She tends to her flower gardens.
I put up an arbor and fence around it for her birthday.
Craig.

I watch the mowing service come (the one we used to have) and do the lawn next door which is smaller than ours and the 2 guys are done in 15 minutes and it's $30 just like that. It takes me about 45 minutes to mow and Jim is supposed (key word here) to edge if I mow. So saving $60 a month or so.
We also had a pest control service who came every other month who just took care of the perimiter of the house. Our cat does a pretty good job with the inside bugs should there be any. He has left us several dead scorpions so he has been working hard. But we canceled that service as well, it was $60 a visit.
Right now hubby is out replacing some rotted boards on the back deck rather than hiring someone. Before retirement these were jobs that we hired out so we could enjoy our leisure time. Now it's about saving money, but also gives us a sense of accomplishment. Nice to sit with a glass of wine or beer at the end of the day and review the fruits of our labor.

My wife talked me into using a yard service a few years ago. Best money I have ever spent.
