Ok, I'm done venting as this is giving me a headache.

Yeah, nothing against Winnipeg but it is a big city, very cold and windy in winter, and the gang violence is pretty bad, not that it would affect him.....it's just not a happy city.

One Great City (by the Weakerthans)

late afternoon another day is nearly done
a darker grey is breaking through a lighter one
a thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
that hollow hurried sound
of feet on polished floor
and in the dollar store
the clerk is closing up
and counting loonies trying not to say.....
i hate winnipeg

the driver checks the mirror seven minutes late
crowded riders' restlessness enunciates
the Guess Who suck, the Jets were lousy anyway
the same mood every day
and in the turning lane
someone's stalled again
he's talking to himself
and hears the price of gas repeat his phrase
i hate winnipeg

up above us all,
leaning into sky
our golden business boy
will watch the north end die
and sing 'i love this town'
then let his arching wrecking ball proclaim:
"i...hate...winnipeg"

THanks to Mel.....she posted it first on the Healthcare thread.

It is a huge tuition savings, but many students lose it after just one slip up. They then rely on loans to make up the difference.

I would tell him that it doesn't matter if he knows what he wants to major in at all. Over half of students who come in with declared majors change them at least once.
This is SO TRUE! A big part of my job is interpreting assessment tests to help students choose majors, and trust me, even the ones that think they know what to major in are pretty clueless about how to apply that to real life.

Kat: One concern I'd have about W going to community college is that he'd get bored and turn off...any chance there are smaller liberal arts schools in your area that might offer him aid $ because of his high test scores? My friend's son applied late to Rider U and got a surprisingly good aid package based on high test scores(some schools do that to bring their score profiles up). He was a B student.

We will also offer promising transfer students aid packages here, whereas big state schools won't.

PS: Hi Randomites, I've missed you. Haven't had much time to catch up, between big job fair Thursday and mom deciding clothing is an optional accessory

There are quite a few liberal arts schools in MN but he has thus far refused to look at most of them, except Maccalaster and that might just have been due to some friends going there.

I'm checking with my old advisor at the U of MN to see if liberal arts there would be an option.

I'm one of those that vieve mentions was able to go to a private (liberal arts) school cheaper than I would have paid at the U of Minn due to financial aid available.

I had average grades in HS (3.2) and posted above average test scores (nothing crazy, but decent), but I was eligible for quite a few random scholarships and grants due to a few extracurricular activities I participated in, and because I simply wrote a couple essays for the applications and ended up getting 'em.

My mom was frustrated with me too, I remember, for dragging my feet with the applications and such. But that was until she showed me the price tags for school for four years, and what I could do with a few paragraph essays that would significantly reduce those numbers. And also informed me how much she could realistically help me with paying, and how much would be on me to pay.

My frosted Cinnamon pop tarts have a picture of a pop tart bench pressing Cinnamon sticks on it. I am assuming that this must be a health food.

I went so far as to calculate how much it would be worth per hour of his time (kind of like an hourly wage)if he were to get even one of the scholarships from his HS...still nothing.

At the next MN peep meet, you will see the large bruise on my forehead from me bashing my head into the wall.

Now granted I know that no guy at 18 thinks his mom knows anything about anything, but I generally think I'm a pretty smart on the ball kind of mom.
