Emo Goth "style" was starting to become more mainstream (if you can call it that...) and a quite a few kids in our class started to wear black shorts and shirts during gym class when we were supposed to wear red shorts and gray shirts. When told they needed to bring the normal clothes, they said that it wasn't technically required, and they wanted to express their individuality and uniqueness. Our gym teacher, without batting an eye, said, "Oh, so you want to be just like all those kids to hang out together and look the same that hide behind the dumpsters after school?" They brought the right colored clothes the next day.

Sounds like that teacher had exactly the right approach! So true, huh.Kinda sad, but there usually isn't much originality in 'expressing one's individuality' for teens. |
