I am finally down to the painting (Yeah).

For your door, If it was me, I would strip the door and use a canned spray primer and then canned spray paint made for outdoors (Krylon etc.). It gives a nice finish and will last longer.

Oh right, the ceiling! You mentioned that before. Fun fun fun!

The Krylon- problem- not enough colour choices....and I am supremely picky about colour.

I've seen many with melted plastic frames around windows and trip pieces.

Not sure what you could to to prevent that if that is the case.
Hi! It's the outside of the front door yes....but west facing and with a covered front stoop- so does not really get that much sun...and there is not much heat where I live, other than a few days in July .

I think it was poor preparation combined with latex.

A paint shop can strip and paint it for a couple hundred dollars. Money well spent in time and frustration come next year. I would do myself but probably wouldn't save a ton of money in the end.
I called a couple of autobody shops - $300 plus!!!

We have missed you! Well, I have.

Stripping sounds like a LOT of work.

When we remodeled the house I bought an airless sprayer to paint all the new doors and molding. As I gutted and redid each room I put in new doors and molding as well. All the closet doors are the metal bi-fold style. I found a spray paint color that matched the (Toasted Marshmallow ) latex paint all the new doors and molding was painted. Some sanding and stripping and spray painting and they looked good as new. Same with the front door. Latex paint just will not stick to metal or plastic. Too smooth and too much expanding and contracting in the heat and cold.

It's really not that hard. Of course you won't have a front door for the weekend but... On a warm summer Friday take out the hinge pins and lay it on some saw horses. Paint it with citrus stripper on one side overnight and clean per directions. (Some scraping, wiping with paint thinner and light sanding. You're just trying to get back to the original paint not bare metal.) Repeat the other side Saturday morning and clean Saturday evening. Mask off the window (remove hinges and door knob if possible) or mask them off as well. Sunday morning. A LIGHT coat of spray primer then let dry an hour. Then a LIGHT coat of the color every hour until uniform. Wait as long as possible to rehang the door. It can be done in a weekend but you have to stay on schedule. The nice part is there is a bit of down time in between steps for other projects.

Do I really have to strip? I really don't have the energy to do that.

I found a site online that says sand sand sand really well- and then clean very well with a strong solution of TSP. Then prime with a good oil primer and paint with oil. THIN coats, and many, like you said.

Thankfully it is only the outside of the door, the inside is white.

I was thinking of painting it black this time? House is white siding with black shingles and grey eavestroughing.

And what finish for a door- satin or semi or gloss? (Hey if I did it black I could use beerdude's Krylon!!)

(and we will just put the door from the attached garage to the house in it's place for the weekend. )

Charles Plumb was a US Navy jet pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience!

One day, when Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said, "You're Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!"

"How in the world did you know that?" asked Plumb.

"I packed your parachute," the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, "I guess it worked!" Plumb assured him, "It sure did. If your chute hadn't worked, I wouldn't be here today."

Plumb couldn't sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, "I kept wondering what he had looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat; a bib in the back; and bell-bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said 'Good morning, how are you?' or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor." Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent at a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn't know.

Now, Plumb asks his audience, "Who's packing your parachute?" Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. He also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory - he needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute, and his spiritual parachute. He called on all these supports before reaching safety.

Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please, or thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. As you go through this week, this month, this year, recognize people who pack your parachutes.

Excellent Thank YOU for taking the time to post this. I have read many things you posted on PI but sometimes don't remember to take the time to "thank you."

I liked it..yeas it's moving slow but it also is giving you more story leading up to the best part..When Vida is grown-up. Previews for part 3 look like it's gonna get hot and dirty.

I don't know who deserves spanking more... Vida for being such a snob or Mildred for spoiling Vida and creating the monster!

I think I have seen Kates boobs more than any other actress. (Titanic, Little Children, The Reader, and now Mildred Pierce.)

True, it is exploring the characters more, but I do think it's moving a little slow. I hope it picks up, I haven't seen the previews.

I was cheering when Mildred let loose on Vida's butt!!! Was there a 2nd daughter in the original, and did she die.... I don't remember.

And yes, this Mildred is quite the slutty thang

I'm liking it so far. The actress playing Vida is terrific. A terrific brat! I enjoyed the restaurant stuff too. Should be good with Wood as the grown up Vida.

I never saw the original. Worth a rental?

Hi guys!

All this door talk is scaring me. I have a contractor coming out on Friday to look at my front door mostly because of the jamb. Now I'm worried about saving the interior trim.

Day 2 of the new job down. I'm liking it so far although it looks like I'm might not get to do the work they really hired me for until September once the new system goes live.
