Yes they can see them .. hence the saying "Deer in the headlight look"
Deer get used to the car noise and they are starting to move more to fatten up for the winter.. Its amazing I will see them grazing right next to a 70 mph interstate a lot this time of the yr and many get hit .. But take a gun or a bow in the woods and its ain't near so easy to find one .. go figure , But thats hunting ..and its my passion ..

My brother, too. I texted him right away when I got to work. I kept wondering why there was no body because it really felt like I hit it hard. He asked, "are you sure it didn't fly up over your car?" I hadn't even thought of that! But no scratches or anything on the roof and I think I'd have felt that. Then he started making jokes about deer steaks and deer stew.

The thing I dislike the most about crying is that it gives me a stuffy nose.

The red eyes are ok, you can stay away from a mirror

but you have to breathe, mostly

Ron, I'm so sorry. I always liked when you brought up your Dad in religious discussions. He seemed like an amazing person from the way you talked about him.

For what it's worth, this is my favorite poem about death (that sounded more morbid than I meant it). Thinking of you and Kathy. Hope you are okay.

The Dead
by Billy Collins

The dead are always looking down on us, they say,
while we are putting on our shoes or making a sandwich,
they are looking down through the glass-bottom boats of heaven
as they row themselves slowly through eternity.

They watch the tops of our heads moving below on earth,
and when we lie down in a field or on a couch,
drugged perhaps by the hum of a warm afternoon,
they think we are looking back at them,

which makes them lift their oars and fall silent
and wait, like parents, for us to close our eyes.

Thanks to you guys, and to everyone else who commented.

Our son, who checked out early, used to say "Sometimes life is real sucky, but you wait and it becomes better again." A friend of his told that at his memorial service. That is pretty much a big part of my experience, if you add in occasionally doing something to help the suckage slow down.

Nice poem Mel

I hit a deer one time and I had the deer whistles on my car so I would say they don't work!

It's hunting season! And the rut. They move around a LOT more than usual this time of year.

Collisions with wildlife (mostly deer) cost our province's insurance company (okay, our drivers, really) about 50 million a year....and that is in a province of only one million people.

I know I wrote this on your FB wall already, but we have a lack of natural predators, which is part of the problem....also fewer and fewer people are hunting all the time ....also our winters have been getting less cold and with less snow in general, which means more food, so they move around more as there is more competition for food = more car collisions.

and the whistles don't work

My dad would always joke that the whistles just scare them when they're already in front of you and make them stop in the road .
