Yeah I have heard they are pretty useless..yet another 'green' idea gone bust.
like compact cfls. Those were supposed to totally be replacing regular bulbs here by this year...instead they are the ones disappearing sure to the mercury...yet another example of good intentions and hopes not matching reality.....

I'm having a bit of a mental debate about moving vs. staying put and maybe doing a bit of remodeling. I've looked at a number of homes now nearer to work, including a model of that detached townhouse. And basically I'm just not loving any of them for the amount of money I would be spending. Partly, it's the neighborhoods. Most of them are not very walkable and you pretty much have to drive to get anywhere - grocery store, dry cleaner, etc.

So I'm debating if is it worth remodeling the current house. I would like to have more of a master suite than I have now. Or should I try to find something smaller in a neighborhood similiar to my current one, and maybe hire a service to help with the lawn and snow removal when I need it.

You have a lot to think about. We remodelled thinking we would stay in this home, but positive options have come our way, so we are going to custom build. That's the only way to get what I really want/need in a home. I looked at buying a home, and also semi-custom (you get certain options and upgrades), but finally decided custom was the best for us.

A year ago I would not have thought this possible. Good luck figuring things out.

that is a tough debate, we had it too....good luck!

I knew the only way I would get what I really wanted was to build. So we went for it. Life is too short for 'I wish I would haves'.

Yay, it's noon Friday already!!! I am SO READY for the weekend this week.

That can go both ways. During the Boom, EVERYBODY told us to move and not remodel. After the crash, many of them are strapped with debt and a few in foreclosure. We are in the very happy state of "I'm glad we didn't."

sure, that is a risk you take, too.

We are in a boom here....but yeah, that could end .....but hopefully that is not too likely. Our current home, bought 8 years ago, is worth over twice now what we paid.

Being locked in at 2.99 for 5 years and having a lot of equity in our current home helps. And most likely we won't be trying to sell this one for at least 15 years....and that would be flexible, so we could wait for the market to be right.

Property usually goes up.....but not always, as evidenced by what happened in the US.

We have friends asking us why, why why are you building?? You guys are almost mortgage free with this house!!?

We say - your home is (usually) your biggest investment, so why not own the most $$ one you can comfortably pay for (while still being able to travel and do other things, less than 30% of your income on mortgage, etc.) It's better than blowing your money on things that AREN'T going to increase in value....like cars or really $$ vacations, boats, trailers, clothes, etc. or Triumph Thunderbirds, and such ....

We don't have kids to put through college, after all, either. So why not?

I think I know my answer. I was noticing that the new houses I liked seemed to remind me of my existing house. They usually had details that made them seem more like older homes at least in the photos, but when I walked though I ended up feeling like they didn't have the same level of quality.

And I would usually find myself comparing the neighborhood to the one where I live now.

Maybe you should explore the option of remodeling your current place first. Get a contractor in and give him your wish list and see what kind of plans/costs he comes up with. Then you have something to compare when looking at other places. If you like where you live now, I would think remodeling would be a good choice, that way you can get exactly what you want, that is if it is cost efficient.

Sure by all means if you can afford it. Too many people I know overextended when they shouldn't have. We would have been over extended at the time. We could probably do it now. Actually Colleen has been saying things recently like "If we get another house, it's going to have..." This makes me nervous. I'm not even totally done remodeling this one.
