My first trip report, LIVE, AS IT HAPPENS!

Hi everyone!

I figure since I was such a pain with all the questions, the least I can do is supply a trip report, live from the scene!

August 1, 2008

We left the house late, of course, as my husband was late getting home from work. Surprise, surprise... Some of our friends want to hold and intervention for him. Every time someone asks "Where's Ger?" The answer is always, "At work."

Anyway, our plan was to leave home for Detroit at 5pm and be checked into the hotel by 9. Didn't happen. Tons of construction on the I-94, pouring rain and a 40-minute wait to cross the border, we pulled into the Days Inn at about 11pm, went straight to bed and were up at 3:15 this morning. Yuck. That's always the worst part of the trip!

Crossing the border was no issue at all. We were asked where we going and why, our passports were scanned, and we were waved through.

The flight from Detroit on Spirit Air was great! We got in line to check in, and were done in about 5 minutes! Effortless!!!! The flight was great, on time, the service on board was excellent. It was my daughter's first flight and she was awesome! She, of course, got the window seat, but the view wasn't great - lots of cloud coverage most of the way. We all managed to grad a little shut eye on the way.

We landed in Cancun, and made it through immigration in about 15 minutes, found our driver and headed out on the road for Playa.

We arrived at the Plantation House and were met by Joe the owner, given a quick tour, and we hit the lovely pool situated just outside our suite. From door to pool = 10 feet. Perfect!!!!

Once we'd cooled off and changed (it's HOT AND HUMID HERE TODAY!!!) we changed and headed off in search of the Mega to stock up on some provisions for the week. We found it and what do I see across the street? HC de Monterrey! I got so excited!! I dragged everyone over there for some arrachera and pollo, and no one was disappointed. It was our first arrachera experience and it was AMAZING!!! We'll definitely be heading back there again before we leave. I have pictures of all this which I will post later, and for the foodies (like me) I took pics of the food as well!

I hadn't eaten in 24 hours, so my tummy was very happy. For 3 plates, 3 Sprites and one agua, it came to about 33 US. More than I had planned on spending, but worth every single cent!

Off to Mega for some happy shopping, we toured the store and stocked up. The one thing I couldn't find was the sugar. After about 15 rounds of going up and down every aisle, I started at the first, found someone who worked there, asked for the "azucar" and went in the direction they pointed in. Next aisle, find someone who works there, ask again, and head in that direction. By the fifth time, I found it!

We paid and headed off to find a cab which took some time, Sweaty and tired, we got back to the Plantation House (from here on in referred to as PH) put the stuff away, took out a cold cerveza, and then headed for a well deserved nap.

Things I wish I had? A map chick map! We don't know where anything is!!! I'm the only one who can managed any spanish at all, and it's mucho poco!
We really need to learn to speak this beautiful language.

Husband and daughter have headed off to the beach, and son and I are relaxing. He's doing crosswords laying in the hammock, and I'm writing this with a nice, cold cerveza in hand.

So, that's it for now. Pretty good so far. We managed to order a meal, buy groceries and hire a taxi. Now we need to tackle dinner, and I promise those pics later on!

Oops - forgot to add: Once we got back from the Mega and my sugar shopping trauma, what do you think I found hiding in the fridge?

YAY! Looking forward to reading as you go and seeing the pics! I don't remember from previous posts...how old are your kids? Be sure to report on the happenings with them as we're bringing ours and I'm always curious how they do with the various excursions!

The kids are 18 and 8. My son is 18, and my daughter is 8. Big age difference and different issues and interests. We were planning on bringing a friend for my son, but at the last minute he decided not to come. He's getting ready to leave for university so I guess that takes precidence!

It's at the far end of the store near where the few bulk items are sold in bins; granola etc. It's against the wall on a shelf. Obviously that's not the best description, but hopefully it'll make some sort of sense the next time you're there!

As you have your laptop with you, maybe this link will help you a bit, is outdated by now, but I haven't had time to update this past year.
If you have a Google account, you can save it to your maps. If you use Google Earth you can modify the markers in your computer.

http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/download.php?Number=511200 - Google Maps

Mhh, after taking a look, all the place markers are offset after Google Maps updated the satellite pictures, I don't have enough time to move them all, but just take that in mind, my guess is 30 feet North and 100 West. For example, all the little circles (black and white) should be exactly at the intersections of the streets and Avenues. And at the Ferry to Cozumel, the marker (white arrow) should be almost by the boat.

That's right! I remember now! My DD is 8 too, but my son is only 4, so a bit off. Still I'll look forward to your posts.
