No hanky panky, just hanging out and making friends. One new friend, Johnnie, walked up to a very young male Policia (AK-47 strapped over shoulder) and bought $20 bucks if pot from him. Right on the beach. In plain sight. ![]() The whole time I was thinking " HOLY SH*T!! ". I thought the cops were gonna have an eye out for myself and my best friend (for whom the pot was for). Talk about being freaked out !!!

My heartfelt condolences to the families of the officers just trying to do their job and do the right thing. Not long ago someone posted about being afarid in Playa and I think my remark was that I have never felt afraid in PdC, still don't, but my remark ended w/something like "the scariest thing I had seen in Playa was some OBVIOUS mafioso" and I mean major, no naming names, but this is Way beyond just Mexicans, people....One could say, hey, he is just on vacation, but when you have a figure like this w/3 bodyguards strolling Playa...Strategically, Mexico sits between the continent that is the biggest producer of cocaine and the continent that is the biggest consumer of cocaine. Im guessing Mexicans are being exploited, not that they are all innocent, but I see this as a drug war between Columbian and the U.S.-ruled drug traffickers-and they have a good workforce sitting right in between...
I still believe there is no reason to fear being in Mexico. The chances of your getting hit w/a stray bullet or bearing witness to any of this horsesh*t are far worse in most of America. Here is an article about the strength of the drug cartels in Mexico and the level of involvement By police and other officials: Mexico Estimates 500,000 Tied to Drug Trade Brendan Walsh - Bloomberg "Mexican Defense Secretary Guillermo Galvan said 500,000 people in the country are tied to the illegal drug trade, newspaper El Universal reported. Mexico has 300,000 growers, 160,000 small-time drug dealers or transporters, and 40,000 in leadership positions within drug gangs, Galvan told lawmakers this week, according to Universal. Galvan said the drug cartels' finances have been hurt by a crackdown on organized crime instituted by President Felipe Calderon, and that as a result more of them may be turning to kidnapping for ransom to raise funds, the newspaper reported, citing lawmakers who heard Galvan's comments. The Defense Ministry didn't respond to efforts to seek comment, the newspaper reported." Last edited by MaeEast; 08-13-2008 at 07:31 AM.. |

I have had narcotics offered to me in Cabo, Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and PDC. I guess if you are a single guy with long hair and are dressed nicely they have no shame. It's not only overt but loud and plainly spoken enough where others can hear the offer. It's very troubling and unwarranted. I hold best wishes for those losing loved ones.

Back in the 70's in Mexico the army had a much stronger presence in the everyday lives of Mexicans AND tourists. I see it coming around to that again. I do think that when you have forces from the south and north both paying off Traffickers in Mexico AND their Mexican adversaries (police, army, politicians, etc) that what is created is what we are seeing- Internal Chaos and Disorder and and struggle to gain power locally. Of course, as orchestrated, this keeps the heat off the main sources sitting like fat cats down in S. America and the U.S.
Time for Mexico to stand up to these aholes and stop letting them exploit their poorest and richest citizens...and their wonderful country. Last edited by MaeEast; 08-13-2008 at 09:49 AM.. |

No one in Playa or Cozumel ever asked if I wanted to buy drugs. But a taxi driver did ask if I wanted to go to a nude beach. If anyone actually saw me nude, that person would need to take lots of drugs to cope with the trauma. I sense a plot here. Prohibition worked so well the first time, it's good to see that it's working just as well now. |

We were on a fishing charter in Cabo 12 miles out. I reeled in a 100lb tuna and the 1st mate ask me if I needed any coke. I mean jeez! My heart is beating out of my chest already. I can't get anymore jacked. And he wants to break out the lines when all I'm wanting to do is lay back and relax after a 40 minute workout.

I've talked with them at length about this execution and what came across was a mixture of deep sadness, humiliation, impotence and fear. |

Awful event, feel terrible for the families:
I don't know how much press this has received outside of Q.Roo and greater Mexico---not much in the US papers if anything at all---I saw an ADF article where it was mentioned among all the other murders---but it certainly isn't getting the press that the Canadian couple's murder received several years back---a lot of people I talked to in Playa don't know anything about it----still it could be one of those stories that comes back in a month to hit US/Canadian newstands----not good either way. |
