Assistant Chief of Police shot and killed in Playa

I've just been alerted to the shocking news that the Assistant Chief of PdC Police was shot and killed this morning by 6 unknown men dressed in black (and I believe other officers were killed as well, have to confirm this). My Spanish is still not anywhere near perfect, so I'm working on the translations and will have them for you later, but you can read the initial report here and the follow up report here.

According to the article, this surprise attack occurred on Calle 20 at Manzana 15 (and I don't know where Mza. 15 is, can't tell where it is from the photos, but it looks outside the tourist zone).

OMG that is really scarry! Wonder what it was all about? I don't read any Spanish so I have no idea what was in your links Heather. Maybe CNN will have something? That doesn't sound too good when the police are getting shot up.

They both work for me in Firefox. They're in Spanish, however.

The first article says that at about 9 am today, the subdirector of Police was just leaving his home with another officer to go about his daily business when he was intercepted by 6 armed men dressed all in black, who proceeded to empty their weapons, firing at least 60 bullets into the two men, who were both killed. It is estimated that the men used AK-47 or R-15 weapons.

The asst. chief of police, named Manuel Jesús López Cantú, was 42 years old and had apparently been receiving death threats because of his work involving trying to crack down on drug trafficking. The officer with him, José Alfredo Gordillo Maldonado, was 36 years old.

The assassins got away in one or more Suburbans, and the Mexican Army has set up road blocks on the highway from Tulum to Cancun and on the way to Merida in an attempt to catch the killers (this is what is mentioned in the follow up article).

Anyone with better Spanish who would like to correct my interpretation, PLEASE do.

This can't be good for Playa. Very frightening that a mob is running around with an ak-47. Good grief.

This was obviously a planned single event with a specific target.

So to put it into perspective these events rarely involve tourists or happen in the touristic areas of towns.

As I imagine the gang problems of Los Angeles do either.

Statistically speaking, it's heart attacks and cancer you should be more worried about.

Here the updated article translated to english:

Admin comment: This is a 'machine' translation and is not quite what I would call English. Heather's paraphrase is much more understandable.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MX. - After the murder of the assistant director of Public Security of Solidarity and its escort, the morning of this Monday, municipal, state and federal police, with the support of elements of the Mexican Army, installed individual detents in at least three municipalities of the North Zone of Quintana Roo: Solidarity, Tulum and Cancún.

In Solidarity, the detents with elements strongly armed were placed in the South and North exit of the city, to try to stop and to review suspicious units in the search of the group of sicarios that around the nine in the morning sprinkled of bullets to the police head Manuel Jesus Lopez Cantú and to his escort Jose Alfredo Gordillo.

In Tulum, also implemtó a detent on the highway, in prevention of which the assassins tried to escape towards the new municipality, whereas in Cancún also a strong detent around the relationship to the highway settled that leads to Merida.

In the detents special attention to the light trucks was put Suburban type, since a unit of this type was used by the sicarios to comter the crime.

It is not of mentioning more than the detents caused a strong road congestionamiento on the federal highway Cancún-Tulum, main via which it communicates to these tourist destinies, at moments at which thousands of holidaymakers continue arriving or starting off of the zone. (Noticaribe)
