Very sad indeed. Heart-wrenching.
I have to say, as odd as this sounds, it reminds me of when I was pregnant. I had a miscarriage on my birthday. We were going in to hear the heartbeat. When there was no heartbeat, they did an ultrasound and found that the baby had stopped growing. I remember the strange swing of emotions from being so happy walking into that appointment to being so unbelievably sad leaving that appointment (sobbing actually). Then, what I wasn't prepared for was the OVERWHELMING sense of loss I felt that night and the next few weeks. Really, really hard to explain but it was a painful, almost a primordial feeling that you can't really describe in words. I have to believe that the gorilla is feeling a similar loss that we would feel as humans. I know, I know, I'm applying human psychology to an animal but I've got to believe that mothers share a common experience, regardless of their species (especially apes & humans). |
