Tulum Cabana Recommendations.....

My wife and I are heading down to the Tulum area next week and plan
on renting a car and staying in various cabanas for the first few days.
I've been doing quite a bit of research on the net but wanted to know
opinions and recommends based on personal experience.
Also....which ones allow for the best snorkeling?

I've never really thought of Tulum as a snorkeling hotspot, as the sea floor is generally pretty sandy and the surf keeps things fairly stirred up. Then again, I've never ventured out to the reef, which is a long swim, but which might also be absolutely gorgeous. Closer to shore, I would guess that snorkeling would be better in the area near Maya Tulum and maybe Piedra Escondida, where the road gets close to the ironstone shore. It looks like there may be enough protection there for some coral to have taken hold.

I will arrive at Azulik tomorrow and will post a report as soon as I get there. What I've seen so far looks fabulous!

Hi Becky,

My husband and I are heading there in a few weeks also. I look forward to hearing about it. We've never been to that area of Mexico so I love to hear what others have to say!

Have a great trip.

My wife and I stayed at Cabanas Los Conchitas (my apologies for any misspellings!) in Tulum. Very nice peaceful place. We stayed in cabana #1 which was really lovely (warning though... there's no AC and electricity goes out at 10pm I think... but maybe that has changed in the last year). We didn't snorkel right there so I can't vouch for that. You should make the small drive to Casa Cenote and snorkel there (both in the cenote and maybe even in the ocean) then grab a drink or bite to eat.

If you do stay in Tulum along that beachfront rode you should eat at Zama'z and Gringo Dave's... my wife and I had an entirely magical dinner at Gringo Dave's... we had our own little table with candle down near the water... The table was a ways from the main restaurant building and we nearly didn't see it in the dark when we first arrived. Glad we spotted it and asked if we could sit there...

A website that I have found a great resource is www.locogringo.com. There are a few cabanas that are reviewed in Tulum. Hope it helps...

Another useful site here, listing several of the cabanas (and plus luxe) joints on the beach:
