Given that the alternative was a Conservative Majority then I am ecstatic! The opposition parties will keep them on a short leash and I would expect the electorate would punish them for calling another election too soon so they will have to govern through compromise. 7% of popular vote ( up from 4.5%) to the Green Party nationally but much higher in some ridings. In many Ontario ridings the Green vote was more than the difference between first and second place. |

I suspect you’ll encounter a diversity of opinion on that question. A lot of people will be pleased with the outcome, and that’s their right. Personally, I think we really screwed up by electing yet another minority government. Final makeup of the parliament will be Conservative - 143 seats (Up 16), Liberal - 76 seats (Down 19), Bloc Quebecois - 50 (Up 2). New Democrat - 37 (Up 7), Independents - 2.
I hate minority governments, but it seems that tends to be all we are able to elect in recent history - this is our third in a row. The election cost $320+ million to conduct, and we’re right back where we started. The process supposedly elects a government for a four-year period, but of course there’s no way in the world we’ll get anywhere near that before there will be another called. I give this government a year to a year and a half before we’re going to the polls again. It would likely be sooner, except for a few factors. The Liberals will be throwing out their party leader in the next little while. He’s getting a lot of the blame for their poor showing, and Canadian political parties have a tendency to eat their unsuccessful young. It will take them a few months to select a successor, and start promoting him. There’s already some jockeying going on for the post. On the up side, I think that will mean the Liberals will have a stake in keeping the Conservatives in power until they can get their ducks in a row, so maybe some things will get done. Also, all the parties will have to get back to fund raising to finance the next go around. On top of that, there’s a huge amount of voter apathy and cynicism with the frequency of elections in the last few years, as evidence with a voter turnout of only 59% at yesterday’s election. There’s a groundswell of disillusionment and dissatisfaction out there with the whole process. This is three federal elections in 4 ½ years. Welcome to Canada, the world’s most northerly banana republic. Also, there are no two parties who can combine to defeat the government. A combined effort of all three would be required to achieve that goal, and I can’t see that ever coming to pass. Naturally, in the post-vote speeches by all the party leaders, they spoke of their intention to pursue a course of non-partisan action and co-operation to attain the greater good for the entire nation. Yeah, right. The first rule of politics is to get elected. The second rule is get re-elected. Yep, I hate minority governments, because I just don’t think they work very well. I genuinely hope I’m wrong - it certainly wouldn’t be the first time - but I guess I’m just cynical, jaded, pessimistic, and skeptical.

![]() ![]() Bob is right, they don't typically work very well, unless the Opposition puts on their 'Big Boy Pants' and decide to play nice. Unlikely.I think the best word for this election is..... ANTICLIMACTIC. ![]() Another minority, the same as we had before the dissolution of Parliament, just the Conservatives got a few more seats, is all. If anyone is looking for anyone to thank for the fact they had a minority and not a majority- thank Quebec. OR, blame the 42% of people who didn't bother voting at all. (Can you tell people thought it was far too soon for another election? )I am actually surprised that there were fewer Liberal seats, I thought the current shaky state of the economy would result in more, since they have a pretty good record of being fiscally conservative in their glory days. sorry you lost in Nova Scotia, bluberry.

Hey, good news. I voted for them. Mostly because I couldn't bring myself to vote for the Conservative MP in my riding, yet I don't like Dion as a leader- and also because I knew the Conservatives would win anyway and I wanted to throw May a bone.

![]() and Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick too. I have never been further east than Toronto! ![]() Stephen Harper, how is he viewed...hmmmm...depends if you agree with his politics or not. ![]() You might hear adjectives like warm and cozy or cold and robotic....or firm or flabby... or articulate and intelligent or dumb and vacant. Isn't it the same everywhere? I have to say, overall he isn't doing such a horrible job. His party leans to the right, but the 'right' in Canada is not the same as the right in the US. he seems like a pretty average guy, really, wife and two kids...you know, Joe 6-Pack.

Once again, opinions vary. I believe he's very intelligent fellow, but he's far from exciting or particularly personable, and I guess I'd say somewhat arrogant. And how fair or honest is any politician? I think their individual identities, values, personalities, and morals are largely submerged by the political demands and exigencies of government, especially when breaking with party lines is not considered acceptable.
