I need to buy a laptop

Any suggestions of a decent one that isn't crazy expensive? Any brands I should avoid?
I'd love to not have to spend more than like $600-700 total on everything(even cheaper would be great of course).

All I know is we have a Toshiba and it has been great. It was about $700.

And it has Vista, and we have had no problems at all with it.

Even though you'll get all the Apple guys in here saying don't buy Vista.

Acer. The best quality for the least amount of money.

Micro Center | the center of .computer shopping has a good deal on them right now.

I'm not an Apple guy, and say don't buy Vista.
Wait, I'm not an MS guy either; I'm a Unix geek.

I think it depends what you will be using it for.... for a basic home computer and she will be using it mostly to access the Internet (as we do) Vista works just peachy... if she is going to be using it for other things, then I have no idea.

I totally agree. We have purchased 3 Acer laptops, all from Micro Center. They really are good quality and a decent price!

The other day a friend spilled some beer on one of them.... so far it's still fine!

These are really cool, I've seen some really good prices on these.

Apple just came out with new laptops.

If you are interested in Mac, the now superseded MacBook can be found at good prices probably $850-899.

you can run OS X on your netbook too, though I'd choose Ubuntu or XP.
