North of Toluca. Ok.
Your options are Volaris or Interjet, great Low Cost Airlines, Have flown with them several times and their planes are far superior to the regular airlines. How north of Toluca is the town? Soon the Monarch Butterflies will arrive in the area of Maravatio (like 2 o 3 hours north of Toluca at a leisure pace). Also in the area, "Los Azufres" Sulfur hot springs in the middle of a nice forest. Morelia is known to be a nice place, laid back and colonial, never been there. 3 or more hours from Toluca. Valle de Bravo is a man made lake where you can paraglide, sail, water ski, and have a relaxed time. Like 2-3 hours. In the way back, if you pass Zitacuaro you can get nice Avocados, that's the main production zone. Nevado de Toluca is an extinct volcano where you can arrive at the centre of the crater by car. 1:00 or 1:30 hours form the city. |

Morelia is very nice. As Jesus mentioned, it is a colonial town. There are some institutions there that cater to students from the US who are studying Spanish. Other than them, you won't see too many US tourists. The surrounding areas of Morelia are very interesting like Tzintzuntzan, Patzcuaro, Quiroga, and Lake Janitzio. If you have a chance, I suggest that you spend a couple of nights in Morelia. You could spend one day checking out the city center, and the other taking a tour of the little towns that are nearby.

You could always visit Parangaricutirimicuaro.
I climbed Nevada de Toluca and it snowed on us. I'm one of few gringos that has played hockey in Mexico and been snowed on twice!

Syl, I haven't seen this before... When we went to Playa 2 years ago we made a stopover in Mexico City and absolutely loved it. Went to see the pyramids in Teotihuacan and one day in Puebla. And DF wasn't so bad either. Lots of very friendly people. The more I see of Mexico the more I love that country.
So in case you decide to stop over in DF as well (not sure where Toluca is) I'd say it is well worth it. |
