What denominations do ATMs give? I could only get $200 bills from the local currency exchange. I got a couple just to have some local money, but I'd like to obtain smaller as soon as we're off the plane. Funny story, I sent an inter-office email yesterday asking if anyone had left over vacation money they wanted to sell. I offered $0.75 US to the Peso. It wasn't until one of the Mexican girls pointed out the error that I realized what I had done, and I quickly had to send a redaction advising people not to go to LAX and get a bunch of Pesos because I wouldn't be honoring the original offer. Between regularly having to change € and £, I'm not used to getting so much for a $! Gawd knows how I'm going to do if (or should that be when) I'm sauced up pretty good! |

After checking
With Wells Fargo "Our Bank" concerning the current charges for exchange rates, I will be at the mercy of the Banamex. Do the banks in Playa have service charges for exchanges ?? and do they give the daily rate of exchange with a minimal service fee ?, Wells Fargo gave me a rate of less than 10-1 than the local merchants give. This is crazy, I never expected my home bank to give me such a crappy exchange rate. I marked on the map the bank at Calle 10 and ave 12 as they are the close to The Royal. My bank also told me it takes 3 days for foreign currency to come in from the date I order it..I hate Wells Fargo but, My wife, hmmmm, she has been with them forever and she won't change banks no matter how much I have told her they are ripping her off with all their hidden and so shady fee's, shakes head.....

The 10 pesos bill is old.
Don't buy too many pesos at home, get some if you want for the first day expenditures, but don't worry that much. When you get into Cancun or Playa use the ATM and you will get the current exchange rate of the day. Just remember to multiply by 10 when the machine ask how much you want to withdraw. Maximum is 3,000 or 5,000 pesos (300 or 500 usd) depending on the ATM's bank. |

currency swap at resort
I would think most of the larger resorts would swap currency on-site but the rate is probably not as good as the "cambio" stands. Help me here, locals, for the phrase for the dollar/peso stands that change currency. The resort would probably be equivalent to the ATM fees if you incur both a Visa/MC and your bank fee.
I went to Ixtapa Oct'07 and the resort was about 2 tenths off the going exchange rate. ![]() Current xchange $13.69 usd/mxn. For currency novices, the 1st currency listed is the base currency and will buy you x dollars in the 2nd currency. ie. $1usd will buy you 13.69 pesos. Here is a summary of my two ATM withdrawals a couple of weeks ago.
11/3 Banamex $2000MX. No fee on the Banamex side. 1% on the WaMu side. Exchange rate received that day, $12.71MX per. 11/6 Scotiabank $700MX $17.50MX total in fees on the Scotiabank side. 1% on the WaMu side. Exchange rate received on that day, $12.18MX per. I also had a $4 "International ATM Withdrawal Fee" post to my WaMu account a couple of days ago. I've no idea which withdrawal it was for, or if there will be a second one coming. It's not unheard of for these to take a while to post - I've had that before after visiting Europe. But if I had to guess, I would say that it's not likely now that there will be another and this one is probably going to be for the Scotiabank withdrawal, but I'll keep you posted. |
