As to your last paragraph. I dont think many people knew enough about Palin at first and with little time left (another bad move by McCain), so when you talk about people rushing to her defense, I think that they were just trying to get the attack machine (read liberals) off her back for a bit so we could find out who she really was and what she brought to the table. I think as time went on we learned that she wasnt ready for the job. She made plenty of blunders, but shes also very new to the political game so IMO its understandable. You seem to be a fairly intelligent guy, for a Pioneer fan, and I bet that you wouldnt do very well thrown under the scrutiny of the political spotlight.
Don't deny or disagree with much of anything there. However I think you're tipping your hand a bit in referring to the "liberal attack machine." One need not assume a liberal bias in the media or whatever to explain negative coverage of Palin. She and her statements and actions and lack of evidently relevant or sufficient background guaranteed negative coverage from any objective viewpoint.

Don't believe the VLWC hype, KF.

FWIW Steve I wasnt referring to just the main stream media, I was referring to all the blogs, message boards, ect. The worst stuff didnt even come from the MSM, it came from places like the daily KOS and complete crap like that.

James already beat me to the link, but to quote a bit:

Quote:
NEWSWEEK has also learned that Palin's shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family—clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent "tens of thousands" more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

But you're still referring to the mainstream media? If so, I rest my case.

If not, well sure, there's lots of other stuff out there, but I wasn't talking about that.

Come to me when you have something a little more substantial than rumors and "anonymous" sources.

Actually I think the media were more often bending over backwards to treat Palin with kid gloves, you know (how's that for a mixed metaphor? ), trying to keep a straight and calm face and tone the language down or restrain the commentary about some of her statements and actions, probably due to a combination of fear of being labeled as having a liberal bias and fear of being viewed as sexist in general.

Actually, I think the worst stuff came from conservative dissenters in one damning op ed after another listing Palin as the demise of the ticket. Kos played dirty with family gossip, but those GOP defectors did the most significant damage by speaking the truth about the impact of her selection.

True. What was Brooks' line about being a [something] cancer on the party? Or Kathleen Parker's calls for her to voluntary leave the ticket? Did Colin Powell also comment on that choice in passing? Can't remember...

But then if they said those things, I guess they can't be conservatives, right?

Thus we see the incredible shrinking conservative base.
