What to Order?

We are finally able to make our way back to Playa del Carmen. We have the new updated restaurant list and we've been pouring over it. Now I'd like to know which restaurants have we forgotten and what items on the menu should not be missed.

The following are places on our list that we've visited before and what we plan to order. Can you think of anything else that we might have missed?

HC Monterrey - arranchera
El Fogon - el pastor, charro beans, & nopales
Pesca - shrimp tacos
La Bamba Jarocha - ???
El Asador de Manolo - which steak would you recommend?
Pinche Gringos - what to order now that management has changed?

The following places are places we'd like to try:

El Jurado - huaraches
La Pummarola - pizza
Antojitos Estacion - empanadas

We will be in PdC for a week where else should we go?

(We are staying at Playa Maya so I'm sure we will eat there and Java Joe's for non-corporate coffee)

Thanks in advance.

short ribs

At el Asador de Manolo, I always get the short ribs. They are absolutely delicious and well seasoned. All the steaks are good, but that is my favorite..

Pinche Gringo still makes excellent shrimp tacos, even though Jaime left. His recipe lives on.

I would also recommend that you try La Cueva de Chango for breakfast. Their chilaquiles are fantastic, and the garden is lovely.

La Pumarola has excellent pizza, and the pastas are very nice. It has a special charm because of its location, being very quiet and isolated, but just a few blocks from town.

Trust the list.

El Fogon: Taco Loco - a big burritoish thing filled with a bunch of different kinds of meat, cheese, and topped with a thick strip of bacon

La Pesca: Do not leave there without the Cazuela de Camarones (Shrimp Casserole), a yummy bisque-like cheesy shrimp stew. Be sure to dip the bread into it and ask for more bread if needed. Get your tacos if you want, but get the cazuela too (however it's plenty on its own).

El Asador de Manolo: Churrasco and Caesar salad

La Tarraya: Fish filet with La Tarraya Special Sauce

Playa Maya: Grilled shrimp tacos

La Taberna: Coconut shrimp and pina coladas during happy hour

Casa Mediterranea: Spaghetti Carbonara

Babes: Swedish meatballs and mojitos (weird combo, eh?)

~~~~~~~
I'll take one of each, to go, right now.
We tend to trust the list but I see how quickly things can change in PdC. Plus I really want to see what y'all would order at these restaurants
Deefer what are the short ribs called at El Asador de Manolo?
2 more restaurants on our list that we haven't tried:
Taqueria Mamichi
Las Cazuelas
Susie,
Do you have any idea what is in the cazuela de camarones or how to make it?
I wish I did! If I were going to try it, I would start with a recipe for lobster bisque (which I don't have), sub out the lobster for shrimp, and finish it out with some Mexican manchego cheese. That's as close as I could guess to how it's made.
As well as the cazuela de camerone, The Imperial shrimp are also yummy at La Pesca. Jumbo shrimp, wrapped in bacon stuffed with cheese! Muy delicioso. Comes with veggies and rice. The only thing we don't like at this place is that on certain items they tend to put a blob of mayo on top - like the shrimp tacos, so just ask for none if you don't want it!
We were there last wk....9 girls on girls wk, went to pay and they gave us free kahlua and something shooters - which just led to more shooters and another bill! love this place!
At La Pummarola, the ravioli with porcini is delicious! The regular dinner salad is great too. Big enough for two with a light dressing. YUMMMM
I've been thinking about Playa food all day, don't know why, but I wish I didn't have to wait three more months to eat it!!
