Not to stir this all up again- but that is a legitimate point. NOT to excuse the use of it, but I do think that intention matters with words.....just like so many other words in society have had their meaning altered over the years, so has this one.

I have been guilty myself of having it slip out in the past and now I never do....but it was never to demean someone who might be mentally disabled, ever, but the meaning PP conveyed.

Raises an interesting point, I think- if the accepted societal definition of a word changes over time, at what point does the new definition (in this case, silly or ridiculous or outlandish notion) becoem the real meaning of the word?
