A thank you to all of those who are serving and have served in the armed forces and who fought to protect our freedom. A Special Thank you to my Dad and Hubby for giving up part of your life in defense of our Country and what it stands for.

The two soldiers in this picture are from my hometown. Thank you, veterans and active duty soldiers everywhere for bearing bad days like this.

Quote:
It was June, 2003, just three months after U.S. forces had invaded Iraq, and Sgt. David Borell, a Toledo native, was disgusted that his government, his military, had refused to treat three Iraqi children who'd been burned, apparently from an improvised explosive device they'd found.

He lashed out at the two doctors who seemed to show such a lack of concern, prompting his platoon sergeant, Toledoan and Sgt. Maj. Bryan Pacholski, to suggest they take a walk. He offered a comforting embrace, not knowing an Associated Press photographer saw them and snapped their picture.

"I'm the kind of leader that leads with passion and his heart on his sleeve, and the only thing I could do at that moment was hug the guy," Sergeant Pacholski recalled. "There are no words. You're in the Army's world, and they have their reasons for what they do."
Quote:
"None of us are that hardened warrior that people think that traditional American soldiers are," Sergeant Pacholski said. "We were a group of guys from Toledo, Ohio, who were firefighters, policemen, janitors, and teachers. Some were unemployed. Some were students in college. We ended up in Iraq at the beginning of the war when everything was unknown. I think that picture just really tells that."

I suggest we don't give them a day.

I suggest we give them a chance at a life with dignity and happiness.

Full treatment for as long as necessary at whatever price necessary.

Decent housing, education benefits, job training and jobs to go along with the treatment

They need more than a day
Ditto.

Well, I for one am glad we have this day as a stat holiday in Canada.

Of course it is just nice to have a day off from work, too.

But I think without having a day off, people would be less likely to really stop and take time out of their busy workday to really think about it and take the time to pay respect and be thankful for the sacrifices made.

There are televised ceremonies in cities and towns across the country and specials on TV.

And the poppy campaign that goes along with the Day does a lot of good too...

Quote:
The poppy, a symbol of remembrance for those killed in combat, raises $16.5 million annually. This is a testament to Canadians and their wide respect for our troops. All poppy money collected by a Legion branch stays within that local community and pays for medical equipment, home services and long-term care facilities for ex-service people in need of financial assistance.

without the day off to help people remember and mark the occasion I think many would not think about it at all.

Only in 8 provinces. We don't get the day off here, but many still take the time to stop and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many brave souls who believed in freedom.

IN Canada at 11am on Remembrance Day we pause to reflect and remember. Trivia is that that time the Germans signed the Armistice that ended World War I.
But did you know that pen was actually put to paper at 5am - not 11? According to the terms laid out by the Allies, the peace accord came into effect six hours after the signing , which is why the 11th hour is recalled as the moment when the 'guns fell silent"... some trivia for the day...
