Girls Weekend in NJ & NYC
On another board that I frequent a couple of the people had planned a get-together for NYC for this past weekend.
We had people coming in from Canada, Florida, Oregon, Georgia, Kansas and Texas - just to name a few. One of the girls, who feels like she could be my long-lost sister, was coming in from Canada. I picked Leslie up from Newark Airport at about 4:30 on Friday afternoon. It immediately felt like I'd known her forever. She also brought with her our other 'sisters' Michelle who couldn't make it. I make it a point to bring this up as you will see Michelle in MANY of the pictures. ![]() Her first order of business? The Jackson Outlets (near my home). We're both huge fans of Lucky Brand jeans, tops, etc. And, in Canada, one pair of jeans will set her back over $110!!! For not too much more than that, she got 3 pair of jeans, a skirt, and a couple of tops. She was giddy. Oh - and we found matching shirts. ![]() ![]() Went in to a LOT of stores and ended in the Bali outlet where we also decided that we both loved the same PJs. Hers were pink and mine were green. Here she is running through the store (it had already closed and they couldn't wait to get rid of us) IN the pajamas - tags hanging out all over the place - I was laughing so hard, I was crying. ![]() Went to get something to eat and then back to the house to see Sparky and Darla. Les and Sparky became fast friends...

We stayed up forever talking and laughing. My poor husband. LOL!!! I think we finally called it a night at around 2:30.
We had to. Forget 5th Avenue - we were going to be at Target when it opened at 8:00 a.m. Apparently, there are no Target stores in Canada and she HAD to get there. ![]() We made it out by maybe 9:30 (with some subtle persuading on my part) and went back to the house to pack everything up and head in to NYC. We were quite fortunate that my dear husband Joe offered to be our tour guide. (Joe's from Queens and knows how to get around the City better than I ever will.) Here's a picture of Chelle driving in on Joe's lap... ![]() Les really wanted to see the Statue of Liberty. We tried to stop on the Jersey side off of Exit 14 somewhere. All we could really see from there was the statue's boo-tay. ![]() ![]() So...Joe took us back to Staten Island so we could catch the ferry over to downtown. On the way, a GASP and an almost-SCREAM come from Leslie in the back seat. "Stop! Stop! Pull over!!!!" After what was almost a 10-car-pile-up....she explains that there's a White Castle on the corner and she HAS to stop and take pictures. Apparently, her husband's favorite movie is "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle". So, we stop - we take pictures - and she eats a couple of cheeseburgers - all while calling her husband (to totally rub it in his face). ![]() So, she sure did pack the little "White Castle" box up in her luggage to take home. And, I'm not gonna lie, I swear this (and Target) were the highlights of her trip. |

Got to Staten Island and hopped on the ferry in to lower Manhattan.
It was such a special weekend for me. To be able to see all of these things (that I've been seeing since I was a kid - the same things that I take for granted all of the time) through someone else's eyes was just such an amazing experience. As we were passing the Statue, Les started to cry. There would be lots of laughter - but also lots of tears over the weekend. Mostly mine when we arrived downtown. My Dad spent the majority of his career as an electrician in NYC. A good part of that time was spent working on the WTC. He took me to NY and to the WTC a lot. He'd take me over there before it was finished. I can remember one rainy day when he took me in to the City and we went up to the top of one of the buildings (despite my hellish fear of heights ). It wasn't raining all the way up there. I remember thinking what a cool Dad trick it was. ("How'd you do that, Dad?) My stepbrother worked at a law firm in one of the Towers. He was on his way to work that morning when the first plane hit. My Dad still worked in Manhattan at that time as well. He retired shortly after 9/11.If I live to be 200 years old, NY will never feel right to me without the World Trade Center. I think it will always make me cry. Anyway... ![]()

The other girls were due to check in to the Hilton on 6th Avenue at around 3:00. We had two suites rented for 10 of us! (In the end, one girl wasn't able to join us.)
We still had time to kill, so Joe decided to give Leslie the car tour. (He'd dropped us off at the ferry and drove over in to Manhattan to pick us up when we got off the boat.) (He's an excellent tour guide.) ![]() We drove downtown, then went mid-town (despite my desperate attempts to coax him in to stopping at Balenciaga downtown- it was a NO GO). He showed her Times Square, 42nd Street, Broadway, and then we cruised up and down 5th Avenue and up to Central Park. It was insanely crowded in the City and when I felt like I was going to barf from driving around (it was probably right after we almost killed the guy on the bike) I asked him to please take us over to the hotel. It went something like this... 'HOLY SH!T!!!! GET ME OUT OF THIS EFFING CAR RIGHT NOW!!!!' So to the hotel we went. Called the girl who arranged the trip, she gave us the suite number, a nice man came and got our bags, and up the elevator - ears popping all the way - we went. Sue was the only one there at that point. The other girls were out and about in the City. We threw our bags and posed for a couple of pictures... ![]() ![]() We sat and chatted like we'd known each other forever. Good times so far. Not such a good time was the fact that Sue woke up that morning with no voice and sick as a dog. Fever - the whole thing. She asked if we could get her some medicine and pick up some soda - so we did. Got back to the room and had a bit of time to kill, so Les wanted to get out to see Central Park and then go over to FAO Schwartz. She also wanted to stop and take a picture with every cute NYC PD officer we passed. And there were PLENTY of them. Unfortunately, all of those pictures are on her camera. Because of the photo ops...we got to Central Park and it was...um....dark. It's okay, we'll go back in the morning. FAO, here we come...(the majority of these pictures are on her camera, too) I did find a miniature Sparky... ![]() And Michele found a, um.... ![]() After we made it out of that nuthouse, I made it a point to stop in... ![]() ![]() And then we were running late, so decided to get back to the hotel. Despite the fact that one of the girls (a chef in North Jersey) was bringing tons of food....Les couldn't resist, as she's heard so much about the pretzels. (She also wanted a hot dog, pizza, and a bagel - but just couldn't get it all done in such a short amount of time!)

We got back and everyone was there. Patti brought in trays of chicken tilapia, stuffed mushrooms, eggplant, grilled veggies and salad. It was all AMAZING! Chelle was hungry, too!
![]() We ate and sat and talked (and took pictures) for hours. ![]() It was time to go and see the tree! But, before we left, we all had to bundle up. We needed to keep Chelle warm, too, so we made her a scarf. ![]() One of our girls was visiting from FL. ![]() She's been to NYC (in the summer) and was PRAYING for snow. She'd only seen snow one other time in her life, when she was a little girl. Well, wouldn't you know, it started snowing as we were walking over (taking dirty pictures with the Nutcrackers lined up on the street by Rock Center) (I know this is a family-friendly board - so I will refrain). Between the snow falling and her reaction when we rounded the corner and she saw the tree - more tears from me. I don't think I've felt that way since I was 7 years old. ![]() ![]() The snow was falling, it was freezing, you couldn't even walk, it was insane. They just lit the tree on Wednesday - so this was the first weekend. Some of the girls wanted to go over and look in the Saks window. I wanted to go to the liquor store. Let the fun begin.

I'm getting some pictures in from some of the other girls. When I figure out how I can copy and save them as my own, I'll try to post. Lots of pretty pictures of NYC w/the snow falling.
So...Les and I left Rock Center. We were told earlier that there was a liquor store not far behind our hotel on 7th, so - off we went. Braving the snow and freezing cold. ![]() Managed to get my hands on a bottle of - not only Grey Goose - but L'Orange Grey Goose....my true love. SCORE! No mixers, so we had to run across the street to get them at a deli. All of the necessities. Diet Sprite and Cranberry juice. We get back to the hotel to find the girls impatiently waiting for us. |
