I'll do some lunchtime posting here. First I'll finish off Christmas Eve.
Before we went out for a big peep dinner, we once again braved Wal-Mart on Christmas Eve afternoon. This is a busy time. We got some of the things we wanted (wine and snacks), but when we got in the long line (you know the one line that feeds 5 or 6 express lanes), Kathy decided to go quickly and look for plastic knifes and water. Well, the line moves pretty fast and I was getting close to the head of the line. An Argentinian man about my age who was behind me and I were having a fine conversation and he noticed I was looking out to the store with some anxiety (his wife had been dumping stuff in their cart on a regular basis and then going back on patrol). I said to him in Spanish, my wife is lost, she is half-blind and she is out there in the store somwhere. He asked "Does she have the money?". I said no, I have the money. He told me not to worry He was right, Kathy got back in time and we survived Walmart on Christmas EveDecember 26 We woke up early as is our custom. I went out to look for coffee and found an OXXO just around the corner. They have brewed coffee and machine-made cappucino. The brand was Andatti, and the brewed cafe americano was just fine and for 13 pesos a cup the price was just fine also. After diddling around the room and getting our morning stuff done - you know the shower, put sun-screen everywhere etc.. kind of stuff, we headed out for breakfast. Down a block and a half to 5th Ave then north to La Vagabunda. Good eats, price okay good start to the day. I think after that we went Mega and bought some more things, including a nifty orange handled knife we could use to slice the cheese we had bought the previous day. I like to take photos at Mega, and seafood and sausages was the theme this year ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After the shopping we headed to El Pirata, that will covered in the next post. Now that we have cleared up my memory on what we did on Christmas Day, I will give a fuller report of that.
Kathy and I woke up early, as usual. I went out on a coffee search and found the Andatti coffee at OXXO for 13 pesos a cup. Good stuff. We rapidly showered and sunscreened with no hanky-panky because we were so anxious to get down to Paamul and see our friend and traveling companion Susie. Despite the fact that we have been going down to Playa for 5 years, we have never taken the colectivo, but this time we did. We went to the block where it was and a nice gentleman asked us where we were going. I said Paamul He repeated our destination to the driver two times. We completed the load and off we went. We were the only gringos on the van, and that was fine with us. We did get stopped by the Army and every one got out of the van and everyone's bags got searched. Arlo Guthrie could write a real good and entertaining song about it, I am quite sure We arrived in Paamul and two very beautiful women in a VW picked us up on the road. Susie and Annie. It does not get any better than that. Let me find some photos of the morning, some of which have already been posted but they are worth seeing again The whole mimosa crew ![]() Annie and Squish ![]() Susie and Kathy ![]() Squish unplugged ![]() Susie and a neighbor with a borrowed hat and a cute outfit ![]() I could so spend a month or three at Paamul. They have activities

On to Christmas afternoon
We went to El Pirata for lunch and afterwards. It was fun. Squish showed up, I am pretty sure. We drank some beers, watched some people and enjoyed ourselves. Afterwards we ended up moseying over to the Ahlambra because our friends Sol and David were arriving today!! Many of you have met Sol. We've been lucky to hang out with her in Oregon, camp with her and David in Oregon for the Country Fair, and to spend some time with them in Boise. We enjoy spending time with them. Here are some photos - some of the ones from El Pirata may be from the 26th, a day that we met Baked and JudyBlueEyes there; ![]() Pelicanos ![]() ![]() Our waiter. They were understaffed on Christmas Day and really hustling. It was easy to be patient on this Caribbean beach on that day ![]() ![]()

So, we stopped by the Alhambra and left a message saying we'd be back at 6:00. We got back a little before 6 and met Sol and Dave and headed out to eat. It was good to see them
Ended up at Las Brisas on Calle 4 for dinner. Here is Dave giving the menu a judicious eye ![]() On the other side of the table, Kathy and Sol were doing the same ![]() After much menu gazing, here is what we ended up ordering - 480 pesos for the 4 ofus ![]() After dinner we headed up the Calle 4 to Mom's hotel. None of us were sure of where it was, but I acted like I knew if we just kept walking up Calle 4 we would find it. Turns out I was right. Bonus time: We met Babaloo for the first time that night. Here he is telling Sol something amazing ![]() Here are Sol, Dave and Jurgen, the bar manager/owner ![]() Kathy and I ![]() Sol and Paloma ![]() After a few tequilas, we headed out. Another good day with friends in Playa. |

Dinner at HC de Monterey Carnes
I really like the food here - good marinated skirt steak, crema, potato, jalapeno, cold beer and very reasonble prices. Combine that with fun, friendly people and life feels very sweet! As a bonus, Josee, George and their daughter were eating next door and came over to visit. Michael, Heather and Sol ![]() David, Sol and Heather ![]() Squish, Babaloo and Heather's Man ![]() I should do some cropping on this one, but I won't right now. The people with full heads are Kathy (at the end of the table), David and Sol. ![]() And I'll end with a photo of Heather and Sol ![]() |
