Some random questions from someone new in Playa and loving it

Hola Everyone!

We moved to Playa about a month ago with my husband and I just found this website and it's just great! Very informative and fun as well, so congrats to all of you working on it!

I already got some useful grocery shopping tips here but I have a few more questions, a bit random ones:

Is there anything like selective waste management here? Haven't seen any traces of it.

Do you know how to cook the dry corn kernels (you can find them on the dry lentils and beans shelf in the shops) into an actual food? Do you soak them in water? Any recipes/websites?

And finally, and this is a bit of a sensitive one: do you know a good fertility clinic where they speak English?

Muchas gracias,

Juci

Wow... I don't know much about any of your questions except that there is a recycling bin outside of Sam's Club. Does that help?

Thanks, Susie, I'll check out the recycling bin at Sam's! And right after I've checked it out, I will start using it

Depending on where you live (and what kind of walk through traffic you get) leave cans in a separate bag by the trash bin, and someone make a few pesos on them.

Dry corn kernels = popcorn, maybe?

Corn for Masa
Finally, everything you need to make your own masa for tamales! The process couldn't be easier. After a brief boil, the corn is soaked over-night, rinsed in the morning, then ground in a molino. We even include a small package of calcium oxide (cal) that you need for the process. Instructions and recipe included. 1 lb of Corn for Masa.

Wow...only on playa.info can you get this kind of valuable help this quickly!
(and those were tough questions, too!)

And doesn't the Mayan goddess of fertility actually live on Cozumel?

Isla Mujeres is where Maya women went for fertility, according to lore - Spanish explorers are said to have found hundreds of little goddess figurines there, hence the name of the island.

The goddess Ixchel - there is a statute to her on Isla Mujeres

Personally, I think everywhere is good for fertility practice

Great idea about the hominy! Now, anybody got a molino?

And with the fertility question, we are kind of through with the chanting and touching body parts of fertility god statues, so that's why we would actually need a clinic

I am betting Merida for the clinic / fertility doc. I can write friends there and ask if you would like me to.

my impression is that Isla Mujeres is the island that the Mayan's sent there women when Cuba sent forces to take hostages back to work in Cuba.

Cozumel's most northern point was where women went for the fertility practice..... Castillo Real.... someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

It could well have been both places

A Brief History of Isla Mujeres, Garrafon and Punta Sur

Hundreds of years ago, the Mayan declared Isla Mujeres sacred to the fertility goddess Ixchel, placing female statues there by way of worship. When discovered by the Spaniards in 1517, the statues inspired their name for the island, Isla Mujeres.

I wouldn't be surprised if you'd have to go to Mexico City to find a good fertility clinic, unfortunately. You could start with contacting the doctor we had when our kids were born, and he will let you know your options. His name is Dr Medellin and he's in Cancun. I don't have his number here, but you might find him in the phone book (a long shot, I know) or maybe Laurab can help out with the number?

The nearest one I have read about would be Centro Ecologico Akumal

If the kernels are white, like this

it may be for Pozole. Read a bit more about it here

A recipe for Pozole
And you can use the corn for tortillas or tamales also.

Thanks, Zelda! There were actually difficult moments in the beginning, paradise or not... I wish I knew this site back then! But you obviously draw the consequences from the bad times and only remember the good times
