I have a similar ? 4 the masses as boxi. Would booking our room now, for June, and wait a month or so to book air in hopes the $$$ would come down be a good thing? Any1 ever hear of some1 doing that and having it backfire? If I recall, higher prices and extra charges were due to the increasing fuel prices. I could drive there cheaper perhaps

HUGE misconception right now. People ARE traveling. Fact is when the economy takes a dump, one of the things many people will not give up is their vacations.

Biggest problem = fewer flights for the same amount of people - if not more due to some attractive airfares.

My advice is not to book a hotel until the air is done. Once you have concrete dates for the air, which can perhaps change due to a lower airfare on one day vs. the next, THEN you book the hotel. The hotel may charge a penalty for a date change.

I'm sure you are right! I, for one, am prepared to cut back on a lot of things (if need be), but vacation is not one of them!

I have always found EWR and JFK to be a bit higher in price to fly out of than BOS. I'm fortunate to live in CT because I have lots of choices of airports when it's too pricey to fly out of BDL (which it always is for CUN).

Just curious, any idea why EWR & JFK are pricier than BOS? Is it taxes? Always thought the NY airports would be a little cheaper than BOS because of sheer volume but the only time that is really the case is when I price flights to Europe.

I think that's more of a general statement of what you've found to be true, it's certainly not always the case. Taxes are pretty much the same so that's not making a big difference. I'll only fly non stop so for me, it's Continental from Newark. If you compare any given date for a non stop on CO to a non stop carrier from BOS - some dates might be more, some less, some almost equal. Continental is offering non stops as low as $333 right now. I booked non stop American for a client the other day, $292 (high season too). US Air from BOS has had some great fares as well. It's just a crapshoot really!

Hi U2girlie,
I also live in CT. and just came back from the travel agent. We looked at flying out of newark and when all was said and done, we would save $160, have to leave at 1am to get there(Flight leaves at 6:10 am), + drive home 3+ hours upon return. For us it is not worth the hassle of it all to save $160 vs. the convenience of going to BDL. Also looked into leaving JFK and it was not much less than bdl. Kinda stinks but will no doubt pony up the $$$$$ to get ourselves on those warm beaches.

6:10am from EWR to Cancun? Earliest flight on Continental (EWR is their hub) is 7:45am or 8:05am (depends on dates). Unless you're not taking a non stop flight...and if that is the case, I have no idea why you'd drive from BDL to EWR! For non stop (at a good price, which they are right now) - yes. For a one stop - nope.

American/Mexicana has been offering some great fares from JFK too, non stop. My CT people have been scooping them up quickly over the past two weeks too!

I think they are down to about $900.00 now....we can only do 2 weeks this year so we booked the Skyservice flight....still paid $735.could have gotten cheaper on Red.Tag but didn't wait long enough.

Airline tickets --

Hope this is catching on around the country, but the flight we have been watching just dropped $220.00 per ticket. RT out of Mobile, AL is, today, $431.00, taxes included. Unheard of here, we payed more than that 3 years ago on our 1st trip to PDC, over $625.00 last year. Not sure if it was one of those "one day deals" or not, booked just in case -- trip is not until June, and it may drop some more, but for here that price is as low as I have seen. Any other success stories?!?! (fwiw, Continental Airlines)

Continental from PDX - Portland to Cancun rt

April 3 to mid April

$426 includes taxes

Great price

We'll spend more than that to take the train down to Santa Barbara and fly back out of Burbank around the same time

I just got a ticket on AA R/T from STL to CUN March 25 to April 1 for my daughter for $116 plus $109 taxes and fees. Total out of St Louis was $225. Nothing quite that good from our local airports, but, if you are in ST Louis, it looks like a good deal.

On the AA web site it appears as if the rate is a Sunday through Wednesday rate starting in mid-March through at least mid-April. I didn't dig much further. I hope someone else can save some money.

Nova Scotia to Cancun - Westjet

Halifax, Nova Scotia direct to Cancun $149.00 CDN each way. Wife and I just booked. With taxes and surcharges it came to $787.00 all in. (Forgive the math but that's somewhere around $672.00 USD). We priced the same flights last fall at slightly over $1900.00!

Can't wait to get going!
