Feedback on new restaurants for my list.

I just got back from my recent trip to Playa and was updating my restaurant list. However, there were a few that I could not visit, so I was hoping for some feedback from recent diners at these new additions.

Molusko Bar de Mar - located on 5th near the corner of Calle 30. It is a new sea food place with about 5 tables. Looks cute and the menu looks interesting. Any visitors?

Cry Baby's - On 5th at the corner of 24th Street. This '50's diner takeoff has burgers and shakes and is a bit too glitzy for Playa in my taste book. However, it serves its purpose for visitors with kids or just those in need of a burger. It has such a presence that I need to put it in the list, but give me some feedback on the food, service, etc.

Tayazal - This upscale place on Constituyones between 30th and 35th serves a mix of French and Yucatecan, as the chef worked in Paris and then lately at Yaxchi in Playa. I ate here and had mixed reviews, but it is a comfortable and interesting place. Any more reviews from the peeps out there?

Also, anything else new I missed that should merit a mention. Only sophisticated taste bud contributors should apply to this question. (ie. Burger King will not make the list!)

Done!

I have already added Las Brisas Restaurant to the list today. There seems to be a long list of regulars who generally seem to love this place. I have tried it, but I do not remember what I had there, and thought it unremarkable. However, everyone seems to agree that the fish dishes are fresh and reasonable and delicious. I did not have the fish there, so I obviously missed the reason that they are so popular. I will definitely have the fish there next trip, but the listing is included in this update by popular demand.

Thank you very much.

The fish special was good. The lobster was sweet, the octupus tender, the shrimp very good, the calamari and fish filet acceptable, the garlic butter/oil plentiful and the wine reasonably priced.

A special like that at 480 pesos for 4 people is worthy of mention. I appreciate you putting it on your list.

Thanks for continuing to keep us updated on the Playa food scene!

I have just a couple comments:

Crybabys- I did not eat there but I may never due to the extremely loud music they start playing at about 9 in the morning........

New to me this trip- Great Eggs Benedict at Hot, they only serve them on Saturdays and Sundays.

Don Marios- We tried this one on a locals' recomendation and we were glad we did, great rosemary grilled arrachera and the best hot and crispy french fries I have ever had in Playa!

Thanks for adding Las Brisas, I had the seafood brochette this trip and it was heavenly, large portion too!

Hi there! I have eaten at Tayazal and found the menu limited, the portions small and the prices high, particularily for a restaurant in that location. That being said, the food I had was delicious and the restaurant is gorgeous. They obviously spared no expense in the build out. The wine list and selection of premium liquors (only Absolut vodka was offered, no Chardonnay at all) was insufficient and inconsistent with the level of restaurant they are trying to maintain. My dining companions were not at all pleased with their meals. I believe one ordered the Filet med/rare and it came out well-done and butterflied of all things. The owner is friendly and excited but may have missed the mark a bit. If I am going to bring friends for an upscale Yucatecan dining experience, I will choose Yaxche over Tayazal. I have not yet returned since her French chef arrived on the scene. I may be due in for a return visit. The insufficient A/C we experienced previously should not be a problem now.

You know it for sure. It is on the corner of Calle 8 and Ave. 10, next to where Keith's Bar used to be.

Restaurant list

Just came back last night from 7 days in wonderful Playa (13th visit) - some comments on "the list". Sun-n-Sand for hamburgers appears to have disappeared. We chatted with employees at the hotel on the listed block, and none have heard of it, but said people stop by all the time looking for it. Don Mario is very good. Ate there twice last year and loved it. This year we went once - service great and pastas very good. Another group of friends went this past week - seven steaks and all received raves. Four of us ventured to El Tacamarone. Great find. The rices dishes are very intereresting and not what we expected, unusual flavors but very tasty. Have read some not so good comments about HC Monterray lately, but 6 of us went the other night and we all raved about it. One addition would be Cafe Gi Gi on Constitution and 10th. Huge list of pastas and pizzas. One of the best mixed salads I've had, with actual green vegetables. Las Brisas was a disappointment. Shrimp tacos better at the Playa Maya. One of our group had a hamburger (ok I know it's a seafood place) and it was unrecognizable as beef. Speaking of Playa Maya - one of our group said the best shrimp he ever had was the coconut shrimp at Playa Maya. Generally speaking, the food is pretty good - would recommend the chicken chilaquiles with green sauce. Doctor Taco has tasty but small tacos - all seafood or vegetarian - great selection of sauces. Longhorn BBQ up on 45thAve worth the trek. Second the nomination for eggs benedict at HOT. Can't remember the name but a very good Argentinian Steak House on 10th ave and 26th. Reasonable prices too for atmosphere. Very good service.

Thank you Dpreefer, your list is a great resource.

Don Mario's is my choice for a reasonable steak dinner. He added a wood-fired oven and will have pizza soon.

Cry Baby's has an excellent 1/2 pound, Kobe hamburger with curly fries or onion rings for 120 pesos. Also a kosher hot dog with sauerkraut, 45 pesos. Their milkshakes are not worth it.

Longhorn BBQ has a good sauce, chili con carne, and fair prices. Smoked, pork or beef ribs on Tuesdays.

Thumbs up

We too are huge fans of Cry Baby's. We started with chicken wings, Caesar salad and mixed salad. We then moved onto burgers and a beef dip. Everything was excellent and the place was packed (Xmas week) and the service was still extremely attentive. We have referred others to check it out and have had nothing but rave reviews. I know this is not the typical playa venue, but when you are hankering for an awesome burger and fries you must check it out!

Karen's

Do you know if it is the same owners that were there 5 years ago? I know they get mixed reviews but we have been there twice and had the Flambe shrimp which was great.
