single woman travelling alone

About 10 years ago I stayed at Capitan Lafitte, and loved it.
Now, sadly, it's out of my price range ($180 in March!).
I would welcome any suggestions for a similar sort of place. I am a single woman, 40s, traveling alone, and I don't speak Spanish. I'm not looking for nightlife or activities, just a few restful days on a beautiful beach.
I like the idea of breakfast/dinner included because it's easier than having to go in search of meals each night, but that's not a deal-breaker.

Any suggestions/thoughts/recommendations?

thanks, all...

Solo Travel

Hi Sea -

Sounds like the Playa Maya might be the place for you. While meals are not included, they are on the beach and have a restaurant. I have not personally stayed there, but all reviews give them extremely high marks.

You can book through this site (see PDC directory above) and with a 4 or more night stay, you get a free PDC card (just in case you decide you want to venture out for a meal or two).

I am a solo female traveler as well. Will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

I can't speak for the single female traveling alone part, but my wife and I have booked with Playa Maya in February. This facility does provide breakfast with your room and they are new on the PDC, which means you could get a break on at least one meal. One experience I can relate: Playa Maya fills fast. We almost didn't get a room when we wanted to travel, and it was over three months out!

I am surprised P-M's manager, Steve, hasn't weighed in on this subject. Steve was excellent to work with when booking.

Good luck!

Steve did indeed email me personally; very nice of him!

Can anyone who's been there tell me about the beach at Playa Maya? Is it crowded? Are there many vendors? Is it safe to walk the beach at night?

thanks...

No, the beach isn't very crowded by Playa Maya. Well, during the holidays and such there will be more people, naturally.

There aren't a lot of vendors, just some Indian woman from Chiapas selling their handicraft and some guys selling snacks and fruit.

'Safe' is such a hard thing to advise about. If you're not smart about things, nothing is safe. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to stay there because of concern for safety - I guess that's your real question.

I'm a NY'er--not much scares me! ;-)

I asked about safety because I visited Jamaica a couple of years ago, and it really was not safe for a woman alone to take a walk on the beach after dark (or really any other time, for that matter).

Playa Maya is sounding pretty good to me... any others I should look at?

And while I'm asking for help, does anyone have any info on booking flights? The regular airfares are pretty high, perhaps there are charter flights available?

Well, we recommend all the hotels in our Directory. There are hotels in different price ranges, from posadas to luxury.

I excitedly babble about the cheap airfare I scored here.

You'll get a variety of opinions about the safety of the beach at night, but my roommate and I found it to be very safe. If you're walking in the evening alone, you might want to stick to the more-populated areas of the beach, but you're safe in just going by common-sense rules. (I've never been to Jamaica, but i've heard about the apparent danger of walking on the beach there. PDC's not like that.)

Sea,

I too am traveling alone to Playa (Dec. 2-9) I can't wait. I will use proper judgement just as I do at home. I may take mace if I walk alone at night.

I found a cheap fare through Funjet which flys out of Cleveland, Ohio near where I live. The flight with taxes and everything is less than $400.

I am staying at Kinbe, which has a website www.kinbe.com. It is a very basic hotel no tv but has ac and everything that I need. It is on Calle 10th just off of 5th and is less than $45 per night.

My second choice was La Tortuga which you can see on this site and get the free Playa Card with booking. La Tortuga offers breakfast and looks just beautiful. I've heard great things about Playa Maya as well and Steve the manager is very sweet when responding to questions on this site.

Have a great time planning!

Sea,

I too was in Jamacia a couple years ago (Coyaba - Montego Bay) and would not walk anywhere alone - I'm 6'4" and no wimp. PDC feels comfortable to both me and my wife. As with Scoop, We're staying at Playa Maya for the first time in Feb. Have heard great things and we're looking forward to it.
