$2 Bills

A couple of years ago, I read on some forum (unofficial Barcelo I think) that the locals really liked getting $2 dollar bills as tips. Is this still true?

They like them twice as much as one-dollar bills!

Do staff in Mexico prefer to be tipped in pesos vs. US dollars?

If you value your dollars at 10:1 exchange they would rather have dollars. I personally don't think they care a lot. Money is money. The way the dollar has been increasing maybe they would have preferred to get dollars previously.

A couple years ago in Cozumel, a shop owner went nuts over the fact that I had $2 bills and actually cut his price to a great deal just to get a few more from me. And in Mazatlan earlier this month, a vendor on the beach proudly showed me a US gold colored James Madison presidential dollar coin. I told her I would give her a paper dollar which she could exchange and she refused. Evidently she thought it was something unique.

Pablo, an employee at Playa Maya, was still proudly carrying a $2 bill that I had given him a couple years earlier and had it wrapped in plastic and was saving it. I thought that was pretty cool. He remembered me and showed it to me right away.

well....that has been an age old question around here
you tip them a dollar and they exchange for 13+ pesos
you tip them ten pesos....and, well... you get the idea
I love the USD right now
