Hi, Vieve!

I ain't touching that question about NYC with a 10-meter pole.

Yes, one example is the concern over the very existence of checkpoints, which some people seem to think are brand new to the region and just connected to this problem. I had to note on a couple of threads that those checkpoints have been there since I moved to Mexico for the first time in early 1997 (even if one or two have moved or disappeared or cropped up in new places, you know), and that Delmy, who was raised in the region, had a hard time coming up with an answer when I asked her if she could ever remember a time when they weren't there.

It's a faulty assumption very much like the unfortunate notion that, you know, any current beach erosion issues must have been caused by hurricanes 3-4 years ago...

I was standing in the line up at the bank on Friday afternoon, reading the close captions on CNN for lack of anything better to do. The guy behind me was also reading and in an excited sort of voice asked if I was reading that information on Mexico. "Yes, I wish I was there now," I replied not knowing where that comment would take me... He went on and on about how he would never go to Mexico, especially not now with all the killings and violence there. (Wolf Blitzer was talking about Juarez) The obviously not seasoned traveller went on to tell me how he had lived in Hawaii and that's where he would always vacation if he wanted a tropical place to go. He'd been to Mexico when he was younger and it just wasn't for him. He did buy an interesting basket though, made by a guy with no arms. He went to that place, oh what was the name? that town south of San Diego. "Tijuana?" Yeah, that's it! that's where he was, and never again! To which I replied, "Well, that 's not really Mexico!" He was pretty sure that was in Mexico.... "Yes, it is located in Mexico, but that's not indicative of 'real' Mexico." And then it was my turn up at the teller.

I have to say, if that is the sort of person that CNN is reaching with their hype and hysteria, I am kinda glad that he and his peers won't be travelling to Mexico anytime soon.

There is no way I would go to Mexico now. Cripes, I'm afraid to go outside because someone was shot in the Bronx and Watts last night

I would like to go to Mexico to escape the gang violence in the Vancouver area! I think we are up to 19 days straight with a shooting or drive by or something. Although at this point, it hasn't impacted my life yet.

I just found a travel advisory from 1998 (yes, 11 years ago) which reads remarkably similar to the latest one (although the 1998 advisory discusses nefarious bar owners slipping mickeys into your drinks - "Some establishments may contaminate or drug the drinks to gain control over the patron.", and even warns about volcanic activity near the Popocatepetl volcano.). So I think the latest advisory shows some improvement!

My people are reading those threads (I REFUSE!) and THAT is why they're all freaking out. Someone really should do something about some of those whack jobs!

We've been here since Feb 21st. I can tell you we all feel safer here than we would back home in Vancouver with random shootings every day.

PS: Added bonus? No snow!

We had some very uninformed people tell us to cancel our trip to Mexico in April due to the warnings issued. We were on vacation and hadn't heard anything about it but replied that it was probably drug related and/or border town related and you couldn't pay us to stay away. They looked at us like we were crazy and changed the subject

Some people have very narrow comfort zones and I'm guessing a trip to Mexico (outside of an AI, or at all) would not be good for them anyways. I really hope this doesn't affect tourism, and for all you crazy spring break kids out there- stay away from illegal drugs and you should be fine.....

Oh, and I'm pretty sure there are more murders on sleepy little Cape Cod than there are in the Yucatan. Also associated with drugs so my advise stands.....

This is interesting...
Mexico troops move in to retake warring border city

I particularly like the part about the US wondering if Mexico is becoming a failed state.... hmm let's see, if there was...say...OIL at stake, maybe the US would invade Mexico and liberate them of the drug gangs. Oh wait...the era of George the 2nd is over.

Anyway, good to see Calderon is fighting the fight!!

Rosweed, You're raising the stakes???? OK, I'm all in. Presidente will be just fine.

More news from the suburbs around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Older gent walking his dog in the park at 8PM is attacked and beaten for no reason (not robbed) and left lying, knocked out cold on the ground in the freezing weather. 4 juveniles are to blame, more than likely gang related. More incentive to skip your long awaited plans to arrive here for spring break.

We're headed to Cozumel to escape the madness. Check the counter, times a tickin.

I haven't followed this thread much...but I just got this note from Vacation Express...

Dear Traveler,

In the past few weeks, the media has blasted Mexico for domestic issues that have been in existence in the country for many years now. Regrettably the media ignored the enormous size of the country and failed to point out that the most popular tourist destinations such as Cancun, Riviera Maya, Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos are not affected by these issues.

I was pleased to finally read an article that put the statements into perspective and I have attached the link for your review. Latin Business Chronicle

I just returned from a wonderful 5 day trip to Cancun together with a group of 20 travel agents and we all enjoyed Cancun as much as ever before.

With reduced air fares and discounted hotel rates available in many of the popular destinations in Mexico, the best time to book a vacation is now!

I hope that everyone will continue to take advantage of the beauty of Mexico as a tourist destination for many years to come.

Happy Travels,

Rene Jongmans
